What makes a good fleet manager?

Needing your opinion guys, as above, what would you say makes a good fleet manager?

Thick skin !!! .

Well I’ve worked for some that’d make a good fleet manager cry.

Someone who’s done the lot from the ground up and not just been a pencil pusher all their days.

1.Having done the job before (so you know the driver isn’t pulling your leg)

2.‘People’ skills - that will achieve far more than any tracking or planning device!

Do you mean fleet manager, as in, incharge of servicing and parts etc

One that don’t chat tish & always rings you for no good reason…!!!

One that treats the phone like a piece off hot coal.

Not really sure what you mean by good fleet manager but i work for good people, they’ve all driven bar one or two of the women but they still know the industry inside out, 99% of the time i only ever hear from them when i call, even if the job is taking awhile you still never hear anything, the work is shared out so your never doing the same thing, every request starts with a “can you”, “have you got plans this weekend”, if you need a saturday off thats not a problem you just ask, if you make a genuine mistake they just ask you to learn from it and not to worry, always saying thanks and well done.

Swearing and shouting at drivers, pushing them to go faster, pilling work on them may work in the short term but eventually all youu end up with is ■■■■■■ off work force, a high turnover of staff and a company with a terrible reputation among drivers.

Communication is the key to any job, including management.
Everything else can be taught.

I can give some good advice… Lol

Knowing your costs ie standing charges
Knowing your drivers
Limit empty running
Never ask somebody to do Something if you can’t to it yourself
Being a good listener
And communication
And you wll only get back what you put in
Respect as the driver will make you or break you he is the last person the consignee see
