camp work 6months o the year on a 6wheeler tipper for a contractor in Manitoba on highway seal coating usually way up north ,starts central …2 weeks on ,finish Thursday evening back in camp sunday night,Can be 8+hrs one way ,picked up and dropped of a house door so no stress.
Bit different this year as government had “a night of the long knives” and parked up 50% of their crews ,seal coating, road marking ,tarmac/asphalt, crushing crew due to budget cuts, will have to see if its "time in " or good at the job for the remaning employees. been driving since 81
I do 1 or 2 days on the agency around other non driving work. Been mainly doing Class 1 reefer work and I have to say I quite like that line of work.
Made the mistake of taking a full time driving job at a big company on general haulage for experience and it’s pretty much put me off full time driving.
In the words of U2 I still haven’t found what i’m looking for

avoiding being carved up on roundabouts by TNT vehiclesInteresting, so mine wasn’t an isolated incident the other week then.
a446/a5 roundabout near the end of the M6 toll…
Dunno what it is about this particular roundabout, but it’s happened to me several times where I’ve pulled out onto the thing, only to have one TNT artic pull around me in the middle lane, and then a third one trying to somehow race and overtake the first - on the inside lane!
I’m thinking there must be a TNT depot nearby, or something…
What’s the bloody hurry though, otherwise?
There’s a depot not far, over the M42 J10 2 miles towards Atherstone Holly Lane industrial estate next to Aldi
There is also one at Tamworth.
Driving a liquid tanker hauling mostly liquid sugar out of either NYC or the Philadelphia area to Ben and Jerry’s in Vermont, sometimes I take coconut oil up to Canada or wine to Nova Scotia.
only ever done one night shift and they ain’t for me
I prefer to do nights… I find it more quiet
Roro driver now on an elderly Y reg Daf. Very good money and easy work running from the skip tramsfer station to either landfill or various recycling depots. Occasional bin supply/swaps. Hours are alright but I just don’t feel like I’m enjoying it/fitting in.
Really lost interest in trucks now, left all lorry related FB pages and no longer look at any truck mags.
I did nights for 12 years (1999 - 2011), variously for Irlam, Bill Chippington, and Argos, and while I couldn’t say I loved it, I did it for the money. It helped us get on the property ladder and gave us a decent standard of living. Came off it because my wife wanted to see more of me (stop sniggering) but if I’m honest I’d go back to it tomorrow. Better money, you never see any gaffers, you won’t get a DVSA tug. And I loved being off when everybody else was working. You don’t need to take time off for the doctor/dentist/bank. And sleeping off the Sunday night ale whilst listening to the neighbours coughing and cursing on a cold Monday morning gave a whole new meaning to schadenfreude…
I’m actually a shift engineer in a large soft drinks plant working 4 on 4 off. In my spare time I’m employed as a casual class 1 driver doing fridge work for a large well known company. Just do a day here and a day there when it suits providing they’ve got something for me to do. I love it, makes a nice change from working in the factory.

Giving up truck mags is one thing, giving up the other sort of gentleman’s magazines with lots of pictures inside, would be worrying!
