What i saw the other day

Peter Smythe:
These 250’s are incredible. So lively and flexible. Ideal for the job. It has to be better to train on a newer vehicle where the controls do what they’re meant to do rather than a used vehicle that has possbily done half a million miles or more and already enjoyed it’s useful life. It’s a mystery to me; learn on a car and you would expect it to be no more than 3 years old. But somehow people settle for trucks that have already got precariously close to the scrap yard. This is the importance of visiting the training centre. We are not all the same.

100% correct there Pete, learnt in an R reg ex Argos scania, and that was only in April last year…had to take a couple of bulbs out on the dash before my test coz they were faults on the truck and the lights stopped on . Also inside the cab it was a bit of a mess my clothers and hands were filty after each day.

Jennie thank you for posting, the pictures of Peters new truck.
You may well have convinced me to give Peter a call later on today to discuss C+E training.
My first post here but congratulations Jennie on you C+E pass.

Certainly stands out from every other driving school motor. looking good

dar1976:
I always assumed the trailer MAM could not be greater than the PM MAM in a drawbar configuration

It is SAFER to have the prime mover heavier than the trailer but not a legal requirement

It is actually legal to have this for the 12/26 set up
Prime mover weighing 8 tonne empty towing a trailer weighing 18 tonnes - not very safe though !!

+1

Can’t fault them. Go and have a look round. Or at least have a chat to either Pete on here or the other Pete who is the Centre Manager. They are both very knowledgable and should put you at ease over any concerns.

Good luck. Keep us updated.

Is the refelective strip on the rear got to be continuous ?

Spoke to a vehicle examiner today who checked it out with his gaffer. Seems that breaks are permitted to allow for livery. Find that surprising but that’s what he said.

Also, the reflective stripe replaces the requirement for marker boards. But the full length white reflective stripe that runs front to back doesn’t affect the need for side markers and reflectors. Strange rules!

VOSA man said that this is being enforced with a softly softly approach so we’ll see how it develops.

Incidentally, went out first time today. Another candidate taught to reverse CE in 35 minutes!

Thanks for the positve comments. Pete

Hi pete , can i ask about the additional top mirror on drivers side ? If you have this does it mean during trainng /test you dont need to ‘physically’ check the blind spot ,just look in the top mirror before moving off ■■
Never seen a mirror there before , mind you ive never driven a truck with the mirror over the screen … yet ! ( passed cat c last feb got a job 3 weeks later … cat c and e pending  )

regards Mike

additional top mirror on drivers side ?

Hi Mike. There’s only 7 mirrors fitted!!! The one you’re talking about is fitted to provide a good view down the offside of the vehicle from the passenger seat. The DSA require this but common sense says that we, as instructors, need it. Before we were forced into using box or curtainside bodies for training vehicles, we could manage by using the n/s mirror looking across the flatbed body. But things move on. So that’s why the mirror is there.

The close proximity mirror in front of the screen has been a legal requirement since 2007 and so is fitted to all our training vehicles.

Regards, Pete

Thanks pete , so its for the trainers/examiners use then , not the driver . i dont remember having a mirror there on the y reg erf i trained in ( not that my memory is brilliant theses days :unamused: :grimacing: )

so the trainees still need to do over the shoulder check before moving off then ?

cheers Mike

Happy to report the 1st of (I hope) many 1st time passes on the new truck today. CE. Well done Dan.

Pete

Pete, you need to get some pics of that new truck on your website

Thanks for reminding me!! I’ll leave it until the fleet has all been done otherwise it’s a bit misleading and I don’t do misleading.

Website coming up for a revamp in a bit so I’m sure those that understand these things better than me will see to it at the same time.

Thanks again, Pete
