Shifts chop and change sometimes at very short notice.
This week I thought I just had a C2 load of steel on Monday 7am start. Half way through the shift I was given Tue-Sat 4.30am shift at a 2nd company, turned up on Tuesday morning, I was spare driver so sat around shunted a couple of trailers and told it was home time (paid 8hrs). Same Wed. Asked by TM to come in at 3.30 Thur, ran bobtail to collect another driver from up the road then home. In for 4.30 Fri, shunted a couple of trailers then home, midday phonecall, crisis, could I cover a shift starting 17.00, I’d have 11hrs rest before then so off I went, back into depot for 3am Sat.
You get good shifts and bad ones on agency and if you’re prepared to deal with the not so good ones then you’ll get up the rankings. I from what I read on the forums a lot depends on the agency.
The other week i was working Ezra a local firm and was told at the start it was likely to run for 2 weeks. The agency would ring the night before about 7.30 with my start time for the next day. Wednesday night by the time i was going to bed they hadn’t rung so i sent the guy at the agency a text to ask about Thursday- sorry not needed tomorrow.
Well thanks for letting me know.
But it could be worse, few weeks ago i got to one place and was told not needed. Don’t mind the time taken to get there and back so much, its the cost of the wasted petrol that really ■■■■■■ me off.

If the agency haven’t canceled you and you’ve turned up for a shift, they are obliged to pay you the 8 hours!

I turned up for one job, booked in, got the wagon and jobs and this chap comes up to me and asks who I am. Not knowing who he is I give my name and tell him I’m from #### Agency. ‘Oh, we’ve been double booked, this is my job’ he said. Don’t think so mate, I’ve been here 15 minutes and I’ve got my Tacho card in’ I said. Just then the Agency call me and says sorry, your not needed. ‘Too late’ I said I’ve put my card in, unless you’re gonna pay me 8 hours I’m staying put. We don’t do that he said, no probs I’m staying and doing the job.
Left that Agency after that, there’s loads of driving agencies about, if they ■■■■ you off, just leave.
