It really strikes me as odd that you rarely ever see an Iveco Turbostar on the road anymore. You still see plenty of other older trucks around and the Turbostar was made up until atleast J reg. The company my dad drives for was until recently made up of only Iveco’s and in the past used to have a load of Turbo’s and Turbostars and as far as my dad was concerned the 360 engined Turbostar took some beating. Then came the Eurotech and it seemed to completely replace the Turbostar all together. Like I said, you still see plenty of older trucks of all other makes but you hardly ever see one of these lovely old trucks. WHY?
I had one on demo in the late 80’s and it went like a rocket and pulled like a train, very small cab but very well fitted out and very comfortable. I loved it
There are probably loads around but you cant recognise them because the cabs have rotted & fallen off and the operators have shot themselves because of the fuel consumption. They would catch pigeons though
Theres a G reg 190 36 still banging up and down the 14 to Felix. But its true, there aint many left. My mate had a 190 42, and I almost bought the one with the V8 470 (?) in, but went for the 1748 Merc instead. I drove an old 190 30 with a fuller box in, it was OK!
One answer might be that Iveco took them for export? Right now this is going on with the older MAN’s, its so MAN can make the TGA range the used buy. The F2000’s and such are snapped up by MAN and deliberately sent abroad.
i loved the old turbostar there used to be a guy out norfolk way or it could ve been suffolk any way he had a fleet of 420s and 470 s on tipper work and i think iveco did a 520 or am i wrong and he had the first one in the country but i cant remember his name
was his name Sleigh, or something like that Carl?
mark croftonsleigh im sure thats it cheers mal
I’ve seen one used by a racing team, but I can’t remember which one might even be a foreign team. I drove one in the early 90’s it was ok, but a bit rusty.
Mal,
That was my guess as well, I think Iveco would much rather have got everyone onto the Eurotechs, especially if they didn’t have to continue stocking parts for years on end for a truck that is no longer in production. For a while you still saw a few Eastern Europeans with them but I havent seen one with a Turbostar for ages.
Didn’t some Turbostars even have a spacecab type thing fitted to the top of them? I’m sure I recall seeing photos to that effect in a trucking mag years ago, although I never saw one for myself on the road like that.
I certainly miss the old beasts. Another favourite of mine was the Mercedes Eurocab, another truck that seems all but gone in the age of the Actros.
Merc Eurocab, was that the SK fitted with the big top Robin?
Brill engines, pulled like a train but the cabs rotted as you watched so that might be an answer. Also the price at which the Eurotech was introduced will have had an effect and if you were an Iveco user, they were REAL cheap!!!
The Eurocab Merc was a wide body SK (all the way out to the mudguards) with a pod on and I know where there is a 570 bhp V8 still working. Real nice piece of kit with plenty of room inside and goes like stink!!!
Hope this helps
John
Mal,
Like Keelman says it was a bigger version of the SK with a spacecab fitted ontop. It was the first non-Iveco at my dads company and it was initially thought my dad would get it, however it went to someone else and he got landed with a Eurotech. Would have chosen the Eurocab anyday, much more storage space inside, alot more livable which is what you need when your away all week or longer.
He’s got one of the new Merc Actros’s now and as my van driving work has suddenly become very sparse I’m going with him tomorrow (Monday) to Ransbach Baumbach in Germany near Koblenz. It’ll be my first time away in an Actros with him, I just wish I was old enough to drive the flaming thing!
i had a 480 on norfolk line in the 80s twin straight through stacks talk about noisy ,no limter pulled like a train we had it turned into a big high cab and painted the thing pink
i had an eurotech with the same 13 litre 420 engine that pulled like a train, leaving 420 scanias freighted to the same weight trailing in its wake
a bit thirsy though or was it my driving
jon
Jon Boy,
Unfortunetly all the Eurotechs that my dads company used to run were only 340’s with a couple of 380’s. Definetly not that suitable for fully loaded international runs. It got better when the Eurostars arrived with no truck in the fleet being under a 420.
