What does this sticker mean?

Daf cf rigid 65 plate

Only start off in first gear? They used to actually print that on older Dafs and Fodens. I know it’s meant to save the clutch but does anyone actually pull off in first when empty? Third works for my wagon empty and second loaded (if on the flat and not in boggy ground).

To avoid excessive clutch wear, set off in 1st gear only

Cheers

Ugh. I drove one of those new DAFs the other day that either patronises you or berates you for your driving, depending on how it’s feeling. It kept ■■■■■■■■ about 3rd gear being too high to pull off, when it was empty. And how I shouldn’t use the brakes when some cockwomble pulls out in front of me, I should use the retarder instead.

■■■■■■■ thing.

You can select another screen as default so you don’t get hints etc. I think you can have it switched off altogether. I might be getting a new Daf which I will probably ask for the wife assist to be switched off.

Dictating gear usage has more to do with the rough arse drivers and clutch abuse than the vehicle not being able to set off in a higher gear than 1st empty or loaded, autos have no problems with setting off in a higher gear than 1st without causing excessive clutch wear, so they are set to use a higher gear wether the vehicle is loaded or not due to a consistent clutch use when setting off, well except MANs!

What a pointless sign; I wouldn’t have worked that out, even though I’ve seen the signs in plain English in the past. Gearboxes with six speeds where the normal gear for pulling away is 2nd do actually exist (some of the older Ivecos are like that and some of the newer Japanese 7.5-tonners too) and perhaps many drivers are used to eight speeds or more.

Daf 2800’s anybody? ZF 12split back.-to-front box before the 13 Road Range Eaton Fuller took control?

It is a 18t or 26t?

This sign would be on an 18-tonner (or less) as anything bigger would have a range-change gearbox, where starting in 2nd is the norm (and sometimes higher, as when driving an empty 32t tipper).

I’ve seen those stickers on 44t units.

My Dad had an 02 plate Foden with a similar sticker in. He was lucky as his wagon didn’t have the “gear too high” style message programmed in. He had that Foden for 11 years and I think it still had its’ original clutch when packed off to Zulu Land.

Never mind about the excessive tyre wear from all that wheelspinning! :grimacing:

Yes my DAF feels the need to give me eco tips how to drive like “rolling longer saves fuel” f*ck off if I roll any further ile hit the can in front you bellend. It annoys me on a daily basis so I make it my top priority to turn it off as soon as I get in the cab now!
