What do you make of this then? Powerful Volvo

I’ve thought about swapping my badges on mine it’s a 230 but feels more like 032 thought that would just look silly though .

Well i suppose if you’ve got a willy worth waving lol may as well wave it,

I’ve nowt against high powered motors, I can see that fuel and time would be saved on a long hilly run, but to save half a day now that would take some doing

I must be lying then…

Impossible - accusing someone of lying is bullying and that’s not on…

Theres a few big hills between here and spain. I remember an article on ralph davies in one of the truck mags when he got the first fh16s which were 520s and he reconed there was a 2 hour saving coming back from Spain compared to a 420 fh12 so fesable in a 750 in a 1200 mile journey. Id imagine on the motorway you would be pretty much on the limiter on all but the steepest of climbs.

Half a day is what, 4.5 hours or maybe 5 hours driving? To save 2 hours in a 520 FH compared to a 420 as previously said with just an extra 100bhp, add another 230 and “theoretically” that would be a 6 hour saving over the original 420, so to save ‘half a day’ or 5 hours driving max seems feasible to me. It would just be a relentless 56mph (if there is such a thing!)

The hills in Spain are like nothing else. Certainly no hill in the UK even comes close. Thats where the saving hits home, when your climbing a hill that can be several km long snaking up the mountain the difference between cruising up there at 80kmh and 45/50 is stark. Not Spain but I went over the Alps recently via the Frejus tunnel at 38.5tonnes and the slowest she hot was 88kmh

Why would Luke lie about it what’s the point?
That sort of power is like night and day it’s not just how it goes up hills it’s how it recovers from speed loss and gets back up to speed where big savings are made.

As an example of its power I videoed it accelerating up to the limiter at, shhhh, 42 tonnes in France recently. It can hit the limiter in a shade over 30 seconds. Even out of services Im normally doing over 80kmh before the end of the slip road.

A lot of the livestock hauliers fron cornwall and the scotish fish hauliers and irish hauliers have traditonaly ran higher power trucks to combat a lot of there running through hilly terrain and poor roads

Just what I was thinking, but it would only be 404 or 044. Lol .

only luke himself brought lying into the tread, just had my calculator out, if your 750 Volvo averages 20 mph faster up and down every hill over the 440 that’s about a 180 mile lead per 9 hr day or iro 4.5 hrs driving over the 440, still don’t see it though, to hold 20 mph average over the 440 for a 9 hr day you would need to drive the thing like a rally car!
I just wonder how much power you would need to get there and back whilst your old 440 is still on it’s way there?

I do really enjoy these hi horsepower/fuel consumption comparisons, seeing is believing. As one who normally has flat motorways tho I think 400hp is more than enough but I would like to compare with a 730/750 just to see if they’re more economical even on the flat. Just from yard gossip Volvo 500 seems to do very well on diesel and ad blue useage at nearly full weight.

Ray White put a picture on of 1 of his v8s doing 9+mpg , don’t know what HP it was or can’t remember the work it will of done , but with all the power not getting used the engine isn’t working had so they don’t use as much fuel ? Only what I’ve been told/read I’m no fuel scientist lol but it does make sense

480 with the badges swopped round at a guess

Different type of vehicle, but we have put an HDi badge on our Xsara VTS road rally car, and it raises a few eyebrows when it goes thundering down a country lane at warp factor 10. (“Bloody quick for a diesel that.”)

Ken.

Anyone remember when Top Gear took a Toyota Prius and a BMW M3 around their track? The Prius was caned to the max all the way, while the M3 just bimbled along keeping up. The Prius averaged 17mpg, while the M3 did 19mpg. It’s not what’s under the bonnet but how you drive it.

Slightly off topic but if working on a paid by ton basis, is there much of a weight penalty for going for big horsepower? For instance how much heavier is a v8 scania as opposed to a 420?
And would the fuel saving of higher horsepower balance the scales?

So you think I’m a liar then. Fair enough, sat in front of your computer jabbing at a calculator clearly gives you much more real world experience than me. Have you done much Europe? Doesn’t sound like you have? Maybe you prefer driving your calculator.

The thing I’ve noticed about my lorry is it gets 8.5 to 9.5mpg all the time. Even the light loads on flatish roads ate similar to the heavy loads over mountains. I’m sure I’ll be accused of lying about this shortly after someone gets the calculator out. Currently enroute to Barcelona at 27 tonnes and its getting 8.8, would be similar at max weight.
