What Do You Drink?

A few things you didn’t know about water and Coca-Cola:

You have all heard of water and Coca-Cola, and the chances are that you have tried them both. They have both been around for a long time, but how much do you really know about these famous beverages?

Let’s start with the oldest first, water:

  • In 37% of Americans, the thirst mechanism is so weak that it is often mistaken for hunger.

  • Even mild dehydration will slow down one’s metabolism as much as 3%.

  • One glass of water shut down midnight hunger pangs for almost 100% of the dieters studied in a University of Washington study.

  • Lack of water is the number 1 trigger of daytime fatigue.

  • Preliminary research indicates that eight to ten glasses of water per day could significantly ease back and joint pain for up to 70% of sufferers.

  • A mere 2% drop in body water can trigger fuzzy short-term memory, trouble with basic math’s, and difficulty focusing on the computer screen or on a printed page.

  • Drinking five glasses of water daily decreases the risk of colon cancer by 45%, plus it can ■■■■■ the risk of breast cancer by 79%, and one is 50% less likely to develop bladder cancer.

Additionally, drinking as much water as suggested above will also increase body strength, due to the large amount of exercise gained from visiting the toilet every 15 minutes.

And now onto Coke:

  • In many states of the USA, the highway patrol carries two gallons of Coke in the truck to remove blood from the road surface after a car accident.

  • You can put a T-bone steak in a bowl of Coke, and it will be gone in two days.

  • To clean a toilet, pour a can of Coke into the toilet bowl, and let “the real thing” sit for an hour.

  • To remove rust spots from chrome car bumpers, rub the bumper with a crumpled up piece of aluminum foil dipped in Coke.

  • To clean corrosion from car battery terminals, pour a can of Coke over the terminals to bubble away the corrosion.

  • To remove grease from clothes, empty a can of coke into a load of greasy clothes, add detergent, and run through a regular cycle.

  • Coke can be used to clean road haze from your car windshield.

  • The active ingredient in Coke is phosphoric acid. It’s pH is 2.8 (strongly acidic). It will dissolve a nail in about four days.

  • To carry Coca-Cola syrup (the concentrate), US trucks must use the hazardous material signs reserved for highly corrosive materials.

  • The US Distributors of Coke have been using to clean the engines of their trucks for about 2 years.

  • If you put a worm in a can of Coke, it will dissolve in two hours.

It makes you think what you’re consuming…!

what about irn bru made from girders in scotland

Every 15 minutes? :open_mouth:

Good luck in finding enough MSAs to stop…

Many years ago taking my kids on a trip home to Scotland, my eldest son stumped us all with the wish that he wanted to visit girders, The place where they make Iron Bru

So, if I’ve got this right… to make your own Irn Bru, drop a girder in a bath of Coke and leave it for a week and - hey presto! (this would explain the rusty colour of Irn Bru)

The things some people believe… all this crap about coca cola is urban legend and probably started by the Pepsi company, which has a greater concentration of phosphoric acid in comparison. Phosphoric acid occurs naturally, and in much greater concentrations in dairy products and fresh meat, and its also a main product in the refining of sugar. I’m curious about the steak though, maybe someone should try it… put one steak in a bowl of coke and one steak on a dish by itself… see which one shrinks faster. Since meat has so much more phosphoric acid than coke does, I know which one I’d bet on. And coke has no “active” ingredient. It’s not a medication… its a freakin beverage. And the main ingredient is water…

But just for laughs, here’s a few more…

Claim: The acids in Coca-Cola make it harmful to drink.

Status: False.

Examples:

  1. In many states the highway patrol carries two gallons of Coke in the truck to remove blood from the highway after a car accident.

  2. You can put a T-bone steak in a bowl of coke and it will be gone in two days.

  3. To clean a toilet: Pour a can of Coca-Cola into the toilet bowl . . . Let the “real thing” sit for one hour, then flush clean.

  4. The citric acid in Coke removes stains from vitreous china.

  5. To remove rust spots from chrome car bumpers: Rub the bumper with a crumpled-up piece of Reynolds Wrap aluminum foil dipped in Coca-Cola.

  6. To clean corrosion from car battery terminals: Pour a can of Coca-Cola over the terminals to bubble away the corrosion.

  7. To loosen a rusted bolt: Applying a cloth soaked in Coca-Cola to the rusted bolt for several minutes.

  8. To bake a moist ham: Empty a can of Coca-Cola into the baking pan;rap the ham in aluminum foil, and bake. Thirty minutes before the ham is finished, remove the foil, allowing the drippings to mix with the Coke for a sumptuous brown gravy.

  9. To remove grease from clothes: Empty a can of coke into a load of greasy clothes, add detergent, And run through a regular cycle. The Coca-Cola will help loosen grease stains. It will also clean road haze from your windshield.

FYI:

  1. The active ingredient in Coke is phosphoric acid. It’s pH is 2.8. It will dissolve a nail in about 4 days.

  2. To carry Coca Cola syrup (the concentrate) the commercial truck must use the Hazardous material place cards reserved for Highly Corrosive materials.

  3. The distributors of coke have been using it to clean the engines of their trucks for about 20 years! Drink up! No joke. Think what coke and other soft drinks do to your teeth on a daily basis. A tooth will dissolve in a cup of coke in 24-48 hours.

Origins: Many of the entries above are just simple household tips involving Coca-Cola, as provided by Joey Green in his 1995 book Polish Your Furniture with ■■■■■ Hose and on his web site. That you can cook and clean with Coke is relatively meaningless from a safety standpoint – you can use a wide array of common household substances (including water) for the same purposes; that fact alone doesn’t necessarily make them dangerous to ingest. Nearly all carbonated soft drinks contain carbonic acid, which is moderately useful for tasks such as removing stains and dissolving rust deposits (although plain soda water is much better for some of these purposes than Coca-Cola or other soft drinks, as it doesn’t leave a sticky sugar residue behind). Carbonic acid is relatively weak, however, and people have been drinking carbonated water for many years with no detrimental effects.

The rest of the claims offered here are specious. Coca-Cola does contain small amounts of citric acid and phosphoric acid; however, all the insinuations about the dangers these acids might pose to people who drink Coca-Cola ignore a simple concept familiar to any first-year chemistry student: concentration. Coca-Cola contains less citric acid than orange juice does, and the concentration of phosphoric acid in Coke is far too small (a mere 11 to 13 grams per gallon of syrup, or about 0.20 to 0.30 per cent of the total formula) to dissolve a steak, a tooth, or a nail overnight. (Much of the item will dissolve eventually, but after a day or two you’ll still have most of the tooth, a whole nail, and one very soggy t-bone.)

Besides, the gastric acid in your stomach is much, much stronger than any of the acids in Coca-Cola, so in comparison the Coca-Cola is harmless.

The next time you’re stopped by a highway patrolman, try asking him if he’s ever scrubbed blood stains off a highway with Coca-Cola (or anything else). If you’re lucky, by the time he stops laughing he’ll have forgotten about the citation he was going to give you.

So Kate, are you saying Coke is good for you?

I know of people who have used coke to free ceased engines! in fact I am sure you have read about it here on TruckNet!!
OK maybe its a common ingredient that is in all fizzy drinks! but the stories cant be all bad, if they make people stop and think before they chuck stuff down their necks!

I bought a Wartburg many years ago with a siezed engine and tried the coke thing as it was siezed solid, i also tried diesel and a 10 ton pulling crane but still could not get it freed so i can assure you that coke will NOT free a siezed engine.

In case you have never seen one or dont know what it is heres a pic. I actually bought it for a laugh.

yeah sure you bought it for a laugh jammy  i bet you still got it to this day

the last person i know that took coke got sent down for a stretch

kitkat:

If i could have either got a new engine or freed the one i had i defiinately would still have it, i never did get to hear that 2 stroke engine running.

Nope… I’m not saying its good for you. But probably the only thing in it thats really that bad for you is the sugar… no different than eating too much cake.
If your gonna pick on coke then pick on the real problems with it. And since its the carbonating effect that loosen things and helps with cleaning, ect, you could probably use plain soda water to free the ceased engines too, but then what would people have to talk about… Beer would probably work just as well, if not better too… but then that would be a waste of good beer, wouldn’t it?

Just seems strange that coke gets the bad reputation for this kind of thing when there are so many other products that deserve it more. All these ingredients that people think are so harmful for ya that are in coke are in so many other things naturally. Phosphorus is not only a natural substance, its a necessary dietary component. So to complain about it being in coke is laughable.

Jammy :exclamation: You have guts :open_mouth: :open_mouth: :open_mouth:
You are the only guy I have ever heard of who admits owning a Wartburg

mrs hasler… do you work for coca-cola?

Kate Hasler:
[If your gonna pick on coke then pick on the real problems with it. .

Like, for example, the fact that it tastes disgusting!

It must have been an interesting drink once though- it contained Coca leaf (from which cocaine is made) and cola nuts- both of these are strong stimulants, and Coca-Cola was invented and originally sold by, a chemist.

Vince

I actually bought it for a laugh

You bought a Wartburg■■? WHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

Oh, man, you got hosed! Even the Hungarian-born mechanic at the MB dealership I worked at years ago laughed at the mention of that marque! (Yes, they briefly sold them here in the states). Frankly, I’ve never seen any commie-car that was more than a pile of rusting metal (many were sold in Canada, Ladas, Dacias and Skodas). Skodas were nice, until the floor rotted away in the 3rd year of ownership…

BTW, those lovely East German lasses there look suspiciously like mannequins.

I bought it for 2 reasons 1. i wanted to hear a 2 stroke 3 cylinder engine running purely out of curiosity and 2. it had only done 10,000 miles in 16 years it was immaculate in every way apart from the engine, it even had the original tin of touch up paint in the boot and it was on the original tyres.

JONBOY@RH:
mrs hasler… do you work for coca-cola?

absolutely not… I’m a loyal diet pepsi drinker… coke gives me a stomach ache…
