What do you do?

As a newbie i have to ask,

With tramping whats Espected from a truck drive doing tramping?
just drive?
load and unload?
hand balling?
etc?

also when a driver is out doing a job is there a food allowence or do you have to pay your own ? if so then thats half your wage gone?

i know thay a silly questions but no body has answered the norm?

bit hard to answer your general question of whats expected really,

depending on what type of boss you’ve got and what the job entails would depend whether you “just drive” or not. personally I’ll help tipping and loading as far as a pump truck but we don’t get pallets very often and definitely never handball, leave that to the furniture bods
basically if your helpful and willing the job comes with less grief just don’t let people take the micky.

as you seem to be working for a maltese firm you’ll be out of malta quite a bit i would expect so be prepared to look after your truck, minor bits and pieces which can easily be fixed by the driver are better than expensive garages and call outs, don’t ring the boss with a light out or you’ll soon be in his bad books

as far as food goes there’s 2 schools of thought, i personally eat in a restaurant every night whereas some will cook in the cab every night, i met an O/D when i first started years ago and he said if you can’t afford a hot meal every day you’re in the wrong job. you should get a meal allowance and other expenses for being away from home though as tax free part of your wages, its up to you though whether you spend it on food or just count it as part of your take home pay

hope this helps a little and good luck with the job

Thanks welshboyinspain

I will be out for a Maltese company i am looking forward to going on my first trip i belive its 6 week out and 3 weeks in i can do yard work if i want?
thay did tell me of the cuff my weekly pay? but as im away i would have to carry 6 weeks worth of cash around (that stinks to me)
if thats the case i hade better start truck driver mugging as a career (only a joke)
as for truck problems in a engineer so fixing things im fine with that.

i have so many questions to ask its un real and i feel a bit of a plumb but everyone started somewhere ,i am just thrown in at the deep end after 2 weeks pass C+E .

don’t carry lots of cash in case you get robbed whilst in a shower, it does happen.
don’t you have a bank card to use cashpoints? better exchange rate to the euro if you do rather than changing your maltese pounds to euros
besides if a copper sees you with plenty of cash the fine goes up if your wallet is empty sometimes they take pity on you (very rarely)
if your truck has a fridge keep sandwich stuff in it for the times when you can’t get food

The maltese pound in no longer its all euro now thay changed around 3 years ago.
visa is the way to go i gess?

I know you’ve got the euro but there’s no sarcastic smilie, sorry

Cash card is best, IMHO.
I’d set myself a weekly limit, draw that much out at a time and make it last.
If you draw it out in dribs n drabs it’s easy to loose track of how much you’ve spent.

thats what i do, i take 80 euros out every monday but as i don’t smoke thats enough for food and showers a week

I used to eat breakfast and lunch in the cab and then eat out every night if I could.

I usually eat out every other day, just to stretch the cash out due to two rug rats to feed at home. Personally I enjoy doing a Jamie Oliver in the cab but each to their own. And my cab is spotless, before I get rinsed for having a smelly motor after cooking in it.

 We had a solid safe fixed inside our cabs when we were on cash & a trailer box for most of the food & kitchen stuff. Also a fold-up chair when you wanted to sit outside . 90% of the time I ate in restaurants & used the kitchen when stuck in the sticks. International work you should keep well away from the handball stuff. Stuff yer back & you are in schtoum a long way from home. Tell 'em you are not insured to get on the back.
