Including ‘allowing’ us (cheers for that) to work 15 hour days and in excess of 70 hour weeks (in the 20th and 21st century )…which had the effect of operators considering it as compulsory and many dim drivers considering it as targets.
Cost me about £45,000 by bringing in a fantastic rule to say we were entitled to parity pay but then like anything that which should be good they put something in to keep a nation that wanted to veto it happy in order to get the legislation passed that makes the whole thing worthless. This time because the Swedes weren’t happy they put in a derogation which allowed agencies to ignore the parity pay if they paid you a few hours in any week where there was no work which allowed the agencies to get away with not paying it.
Thanks to Boris and Brexit the govt repealed that derogation last year to come into effect from April and I got the resulting wage increase I should have had years ago.

Thanks to the EU for allowing us to work up to 15hrs a day or 21hrs when double manning with just 9hrs off and also being allowed to work a maximum 84hr week. Much better than the 11hrs a day we had under GB domestic rules.
I wonder if they’ll change the name of the driver hours from EU driver hours to summut else? Can’t honestly imagine them switching us back to domestic hours, but you never know.
Be nice if we got rid of WTD too as it would save a ton of paper being printed for 6 hour infringements.

This is one of the very rare cases where permanent got more than agency. Only place I’ve ever been to in 20 odd years where it’s been the case. As you say normally agency are on more, sometimes a lot more such as when I was at Reed Boardalls on agency in the early 2000s and my basic rate was their overtime and then I got time and a half after 8hrs. Sad that that was probably one of the last times I did get time and a half because not long after that the Poles were allowed in and everyone went to that flat rate paid straight through nonsense.

You do know thats a myth dont you?
Theres no ban on curvy bananas or curly cucumbers. There is a grading system however so “perfect” bananas (ie what is expected to be a banana) get top grade, those with imperfections such as not being the right shape etc get a lower grade.
All can still be traded commercially and bought and sold.
Its why supermarkets can and do sell wonky fruit and veg. And why its also often cheaper.

Well the EU enforced the use of tachographs so that transport bosses could no longer ask a driver to break the law by exceeding his hours or having insufficient breaks thus ensuring that everyone did the job correctly and to the letter of the law which protected the driver. Absolutely foolproof.

So, in 1989, the walls came down, what should have happened?
Yes, the acceptance of the ex-com bloc was done in a hurry, but what would have happened otherwise? A dozen poor, underfed, heavily armed countries at the frontiers? Would saying “No” too long have resulted in violence? Would it have meant loads of fit young men and women wanting a better future walking across a few yards? Look at all those coming from different continents, not just next door!
For decades we in the west had been talking of freedom for the oppressed east, so when they get it do we chuck them a crust and tell them to pick themselves because they ain`t getting a share of our pie?

Yes, I remember doing regular Italy trips in the late 1980s and the tachograph ensured that we drove to within the letter of the law (cough, cough. )
