What are the options?

A change in life circumstances last year made it necessary to jack in my job of 7 years (class 2, very early starts, multi-drop) and return to agency work whilst I sort out what I can and am willing to do. Went back to the Southampton based agency I was with previously even though I now live near Portsmouth, so most of what I get is Southampton area, no problem with the morning run in to wherever but getting home late afternoon/ early evening is a right pain M27 jncs. 3, 4, 5, 7/8, 9, 11 & 12 all often presenting big hold ups.

I don’t want to start before 6am and need to finish by 6pm, as things stand right now Mon-Fri with the occasional Sat rather than have weekly rest during the week. Can’t do distance/nights out, did it for 10 years and probably won’t ever do it again. Also had enough of multi-drop and physically hand-balling hurts far too much these days, over 30 years of lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling has damaged me enough.

For the past 7 months I’ve done mainly RoRo class 2 or walking floor class 1, the job suits me but location doesn’t and new starters have to work both days of the w/e and break during the week anyway. Too much hanging around followed by rushing around doing containers, I’m of an age and mentality that I won’t be rushed by anyone, I’ll push on IF I feel like it but much prefer just to keep moving and plod for the greater part nowadays.

Other than looking at something like dustcarts where the hours fit but the pay drop is a bit too severe, what’s out there worth looking into?

TJ Transport were after tipper drivers according to Indeed. Sibley Materials were after the same aswell.

move to southampton?

Going to be a challenge getting the 06:00 - 18:00 hours I suspect. The cargo doesn’t need hand balling though.

I did a bit on fridges doing locals. Started at 6 and finished around 5. Quite enjoyed it. Maybe just a Lincolnshire thing what with all the fridge companies and produce places around.

Only one option after reading this, and that is retirement, crack on and enjoy,:smiling_face:

Jesus wept why not slip the noose around his neck and kick the stool away. :unamused:

Comon lads. Don’t beat about the bush.

I work on the buses ,nought wrong with doing buses.Dont get me started on the zbing passengers though.

I note that you have your class 1. There must be some nice easy artic work near you?

I can’t help but think the OP is searching for something he’s really gonna struggle to find in this game.

Start & finish between 6am & 6pm?
Local to home?
Home every night?
Monday - Friday?
Good pay?

Most of us dream of that but find ourselves compromising somewhere.

If I needed all the above that desperately & couldn’t compromise, i’d be looking to change my profession.

I got all of that bar “good pay” doing locals on fridges. The lack of good pay bit is a regional thing. No good pay around these parts, but houses are cheaper. I liked locals, good fun, radio on pulling into little produce suppliers picking up and dropping trailers.

TJ had a bad name a few years ago, has this improved?
Sibley based in Nursling, wrong side of Eastleigh for me
RB have a lot of sites but nothing near me that I’m aware of.

EMR, DS Smith, Veolia and others have sites off the Eastern Road, Portsmouth. L&S on Portsdown Hill Road. I’ve seen a fleet of tippers using Portsdown Hill with “INERT” on the side but google isn’t returning a business site. So I am aware of places that do RoRo and/or tipper work in my immediate area, what these firms are like to work for, hours/ days/ pay rate unknown unless I ask.

Retirement isn’t an option at 52 unless the I win the lottery, I won’t be counting on that to see me through the next 13+ years

I fully accept that I’m not going to earn “big” money, obviously the more the better but as long as the mortgage is being paid, can put decent food on the table and we can enjoy a reasonable quality of life, I have no desire to risk my health (mental and physical) for a fatter pay packet.

Main reason for this thread isn’t so much to look at what may or may not be available in areas that I have already worked in but to ask what else is out there that may an option for me, bus driving isn’t one that I’m interested in! There are probably a number of sectors that exist and vehicles that I see every day that just don’t register as potential areas of employment, maybe most of you are different but I tend to notice more vehicles doing the same/ similar job to the one I’m doing at the time rather than those doing something I’ve never had any connection with that might be interesting.

ive a number for childlike/ Samaritans! :grimacing: please don’t jump off any bridges in the vicinity! especially on a Friday, it’ll ■■■■ the motorway network up :sunglasses:

What’s the bad rep of TJ concerned with? They’ve got a lot of tidy looking modern kit, certainly from what comes up this end of the A34. I know that means little though.
Are RW Plant from around your way, the ones that do the Highways Agency work? They had a recycling yard next to the M3 last time I was down your way.

See them about a lot but not to talk to, as you say everything looks tidy. Only real bad press I heard was about 5 years ago so may well not relevant any more. Makes me think of a job I took nearly 20 years ago, warned off by many regarding them but had 10 good years there.

only solution change profession .
