What a minefield!

Hi folks,
So I am a new pass Class 2 driver. Would have had my Class 1 test last week was it not for the Lockdown, but I don’t mind waiting. :unamused:

I thought I would post here as I am looking for experienced drivers to advise the chances of long term adhoc work.

I plan to stay in my current office job which is shift work where I work from 14hrs per week some weeks to 48hrs for others until my licences are fully paid for.
So the plan is is to pick up agency work on me days off to gain some experience. I know that in the current climate I have little to no chance.

Ever hopeful I will carry on regardless. Would it be ridiculous to think I could join an agency and just get texts looking for my availability or am I going to have to relentlessly scour the internet on a weekly basis.

It would be good to hear other people’s experiences and advice. I have posted in the newbie forum and took the advice and looked at the few agencies but the ads are all so vague and uninspiring…

You will get work off of agency’s, however most will look for a commitment of a few days a week and can be very temperamental if you cancel a shift or only want to do certain days. Some can be very quick to drop you or just stop giving you work and false promises.

As a new driver it’s best to make yourself available as much as possible without letting them take the ■■■■. For example phoning you at 00:59 for a 1am start and want you there in 5 minutes.

You will get work somewhere but I wouldn’t rely on it as a sole income as it can be very quick to change.

Get yourself registered with any and all agencies in your area. There is no commitment to you or from yourself.

Adhoc days only + agencies = very little work offered as they mostly want to book drivers for full weeks or set days each week.

I used to only work Fridays for an agency, doing office work rest of time. Seemed to work quite well as it’s amazing how many people took holidays to get a long weekend or would blob on a Friday. I did used to call them occasionally just to be a bit pro active too and remind them I was there if it had gone quiet for a week or two. Thankfully I wasn’t reliant on the work for my wages.
Unfortunately last time I reckoned it’s not financially worth me doing CPC training to catch up my licence, so office work it is for me.
Do miss the road though.
