I currently run an old Scania 113m 6x2 tractor unit to move my low loader. The wagon has been fantastic, easy to maintain and extremely reliable. Was really spoilt with this one, double sleeper, night heater, sliding 5th wheel, beacons and hydraulic power pack. I am looking to upgrade. I only do around 4000 miles per year so looking for something a bit more modern but still on paper tacho, so will be pre 2006. What model of Scania or Volvo would you recommend. I realise many of you are driving something more modern, but what were you driving 7 to 10 years ago and really liked for its reliability? If I can’t find anything then may restore the Scania 113 any recommendations on somewhere to get it restored?

Does not matter about your tacho as in around 2 years time you will have to get it changed to a digi one (so I have been told)

Thanks, OK ignoring the tacho, budget restricts me to something older, I have around £9K +the VAT of course?
r420 manual.
r500 v8 driven right good on fuel and bullet proof motor
Scania all the way, Volvo is way overrated.
If you are only doing 4000 miles PA do you really want to get involved in all the hassle of modern electronics?
any 05 vehicle is going to have some degree of ECU control, which by now will be becoming temperamental.

I thought the Japanese only liked Volvo & Renault lol
The best thing to do would be restore the 113 in my opinion, well built simple to work on and by now going up in value!
It ain’t going to cost £9k to restore the old girl is it…and why buy a bag of unknown trouble that is a technology nightmare.
End of , Problem sorted.

I remember them having some when they ran Netto distribution.
Is the 113 a tag axle? personally I’d go for a 164 as I think they’ll be the next classic

I’d agree, 9k would get you a tidy V8 164, not massively complex elecrically, decent cab and in my opinion one of the most bullet proof engines of any manufacturer. A friend runs 2 with the lowest mileage one being well towards 2 million kms and he just will not part with them as they’ve hardly needed a spanner on them.
Thanks for all the posts so far really helpful. I keep debating whether to restore the 113, it would be a classic in its own right and has been excellent. If I do change I will definitely stick with a Scania, (420, V8 or 164) manual, but am really concerned at the age I am looking to buy, the electronics will let me down.
Thanks to all who have posted a reply, I really appreciate it,
A repeat post on the old time section of this site may well serve you well regarding advice about restoring the 113. Other than that, either go to one of the remaining rallies this year or try contacting one of the larger haulage companies with a fleet of restored vehicles to see who they have used for restoration. The specialist old lorry magazines like classic and vintage commercials, or heritage commercials carry advertisements from heavy vehicle restoration companies. If nowhere else you will find these magazines at most motorway service area newsagents or at WH Smith locally.
PM if you wish.
Definitely keep the Mark 3 and spend a bit on it.
Then run it for ever.

We’ve just sold a 2003 series 2 FH12 with over 1m Kms on the clock, the truck has been pretty reliable in the 5 years I’ve been there and hasn’t suffered any electrical gremlins.
