Started doing loads out of the dairy at Aspatria in W ■■■■■■■ to N Yorks in an artic. Looking at a map there’s no obvious way to get to the place. I went A66 to Keswick, A591 to Bothel, A595 south for about 5 miles then took a right down the B5301 into the back side of Aspatria through Parsonby and Arkleby villages. B5301 feels a bit wrong being basically a wide single track road as there’s no lines down the middle but I think that the A591 is narrower in places yet I met a handful of heavies coming the other way along there. No weight limits on any of them so I assume the route is fair game?
Without going absolutely miles out of the way up to Carlisle then coming back down tha A595/6 the only other possibility looks like A66 to Cockermouth then A591 to Maryport and then up the A596, but that’s a bit of a trek too.
I’m not frightened of challenging roads but some roads are just wholly unsuitable for artics especially if there’s a fair amount of traffic. What do the locals suggest?

Ok Carl, so you come on here and call everybody else …quote./ ''Thick ■■■■ s ''at every opportunity, then ask us for help?

But hey, I’ll help anybody me Carl…even you mate.

You say you aint frightened of challenges…, well there’s a hill at Sebergham, all us ''Thick ■■■■.s ‘’ that are local drivers use it with no problems, so I’m sure you will be ok Carl, (given your highly inflated opinion of yourself) but some lesser mortals have come unstuck when road is wet…so be warned.
if you are empty no probs…go on Carl you can do it!
End of that road (staggered junction) there is a width limit through Wigton (depends on time of day…on signpost) so a 8 to 9 mile detour around it. So turn right on A595 to roundabout at Thursby.
Left at Thursby r/a A596n Wigton by pass to Aspatria, left x roads on B5301.
It will be quicker to go from aspatria to Carlisle on the a596 and on to your destination than navigating them back roads then the 66 surely? 20 mins to Carlisle as opposed to 30 mins in the 66 then 10 on the 591 then another 10 on the 595 plus what must be another 15-20 mins negotiating the back roads that are only just wide enough for a van. It will take even longer to go 66 to cockermouth then over its a good hour in a car at the best of times

Yeh ok,… but he said he did not want to go that way in his o/p

Going anywhere in West ■■■■■■■ is a PITA IMO and every route is ‘scenic’, Millom anyone?

What is it to be people? London is a ■■■■ hole, rural destinations are a ■■■■ hole.
Are some drivers only confident on straight motorway journeys?
One has to remember country folk can be more laid back than city slickers.
I made the schoolboy error of driving in Norfolk the same way as in London yesterday.
Usual busy roundabout trick of starting her trickling having picked a decent gap after a few cars had gone past. Anyway just as I was expecting the cars to whiz passed so I could hit full thrust there was a screech of brakes and they both stopped to let me out.
I gestured apologetically but was responded to with a 6 fingered coffee bean shake and some form of expletive in carrotcrunch which unfortunately I’m not fluent in.
Totally my fault but one has to drive to the conditions be it busy cities or amongst illegally related country folk.
No offence intended to illegally related country folk.
I thought Mr usher was an expert in everything.

I didn’t ask anyone for help. I posted it to see if anyone would pose suggestions for alternative routes which you and the other guy have done - thanks. I never considered J41 and those B roads so that route may be worth a try to see if it’s shorter time wise. Interestingly, post code to post code on googlemaps plans the route along the B5305 to the A595 then south on the A595 for a few miles, turn right and left through Fletchertown and into Aspatria down the B5299. Road looks OK on streetview and can’t see any weight limits so perhaps that’s another choice.

Yeh the way you mention is also ok.
Also if you hit Wigton at the right time, you can go through it, but be careful turning left at the T junction at the Fountain/memorial in Wigton

Thanks. It’s usually very late night or early hours when I’m inbound and 1am+ outbound.
loaded lift tanks out of there a few times and take them back to teesport. going there i always use the a66 to cockermouth and down the 5301. coming back it’s six and 2 threes using the same route in reverse or going through carlisle. depends on if it’s wet or not as it’s a struggle to get up the bank on the 5301 loaded.

If this isn’t asking for help then WTF is?
Man up and grow a pair and show some humility - it isn’t a crime.
And thank all the folks who have helped (yes that word again) you with their considered replies.
A little end of the week tough love message from Tnet.

There was a rumour going around about 10 yrs ago that a local farmer was trying to get it classed as a 7.5 tonne route by making sure more trucks got stuck by spreading diesel on the hill. It was never proven, but you could see the colours from the fuel when the road was wet, which looked far more than the odd leak.
I came a cropper myself once about 15yrs ago, some ■■■■■■ came down on the wrong side on the bend, I had a fully loaded old Dutch tilt on with poor brakes that would not hold me, a complete heap of ■■■■ it was. I rolled back and had to steer it into the bank to miss the house at the bottom…full recovery job
If you had to reverse back down in the older days, you could use the old ratchet trailer brake to get you down a bit safer, obviously not now.
As I said, many have fallen foul of that hill for last 50 odd years, according to the old drivers I know.
