Hi trunkera1,
You are burning a few candles if you were tramping before 1966 when the severn bridge was opened. But as you know there is a lot of Wales that doesn’t need the bridge’s to cross.I remember them starting on the Severn Bridge about 1960 when I was gping to Avonmouth with my Dad,it was a fair old sight seeing those big scrapers and bulldozers in those days, hadn’t seen kit like that before, not on that scale.
Cheers Dave.

hi dave, spot on with the year!they were nearly finished when i started on smiths.in fact i did a short stint for mr Mcalpine in 69 driving half cab foden dumpers on the m4 junctions 18 -17,i only lasted 4 months i was knackered!! but the money was brilliant, all the hours you wanted   …trunkera1

Now Dave here’s a motor that would have been right up your street ! 6.354/5spd/eaton 2spd. When can you start ? Dennis.

hiya,
Dennis used to see your motors frequently you must have had one hell of a fleet at one time, can you remember how many at your peak, never saw an untidy motor i was a canny rope and sheeter and always noticed your motors were well wrapped up, those things you look at when you try your best to make your own load look tidy.
thanks harry long retired.

Hi Dennis,
The Seddon’s that I drove had a perkins 6354,wouldn’t pull your granny off the ■■■■■■■■■■■■■■ steering wheel, horrible things.I expect that M reg had a turbo, most at about that time had turbo’s,the 13/4’s that I drove were F reg, only drove them if mine was in the garage or somene on holiday, had one for a fornight once,no thanks. :imp:
Cheers Dave.
PS,hows your head after the alcohol and blancmange.

Hi Harry,
I think he put on an earlier post that he ran 95 lorries when they were at their peak.
Cheers Dave.

A few more from Mansel Davies.

hiya,
Thanks for the Bewick info Dave must have missed that bit which, “according to my old lady” is very unusual she normally tells me i miss nowt, quite a sizeable outfit though was a frequent sight on the M6.

Hiya “H” thanks for the compliment which I will accept on behalf of all my former drivers and shunters ! We always demanded and achieved high standards without a lot of difficulty as a pride in the job rubs off from one lad to the other.I was taught as a trailer mate to do it once and do it proper or don’t touch it !! So when I started on my own I maintained the standard and my first driver was every bit as tidy so thats how things continued for the next 15 years until the Tautliners took over ! Todays drivers would S**t themselves if they were presented with some of the loads we had to sheet and rope in our day “H” don’t you think? Regards Bewick.

Sober as a judge Dave !! Got hollow legs you know !! To the best of my knowledge the 4 wheeler Seddon wasn’t turbo’d but then again it didn’t hang about long enough for me to find out after the takeover!! Cheers Dennis.

hiya,
Bewick, was watching a guy who had delivered shelving to a store in Chester Le Street, not on purpose i hasten to add, he had the car park blocked and i had no escape, and his attempt to fasten the remaining part of the load on was laughable and certainly did’nt look very safe, the sheet was dragged round the back of what was left of the load a couple of 3x3s thrown on top of the slack sheet and not a hint of a rope, wonder did he get to the next drop without the flapping sheet tossing the timbers through somebody’s windscreen, ugh.
thanks harry long retired.

There was a row of these Fh Volvo’s at the yard, only problem was the cars parked in front of them, managed to get part of this one.
