A lot of the ex Tilcon boys bought their own wagons when the quarry was sold to Minorco, now run by Tarmac, Gore was the last place I drove out of, I live two miles across the valley and look straight at the quarry.
I still have regular contact with all the drivers and operators.I may have seen you then, I used to work for STB transport out of Ballidon during the early '90’s. Norman was the weighbridge man in those days. I am surprised that Gore is still open as Tarmac have done what they do best and “mothballed” a few quarries around here and closed some blockplants. Not the same type of company as Tilcon…unfortunately!
Pete.
Hi I also worked out of Gore for Tilcon, worked a lot of nights…Fourways Oakmere sand to gore stone to Salford, and a load of old tarmac back to fourways… Happy Days!!!
I like your Avatar Countycruiser, SRB 243K driven by David Loyd from Cellarhead, Stoke on Trent! Done a few miles myself in that old gal. Did a bit out of Fourways myself, but that was after my Tilcon days were over.
Pete.

Hi countycruiser,
They have just taken the wash plant out of the Gore, the tar plant is numbered ready to come down. They seem to be asset stripping the place. Alot of the work is now being done from different quarries.
Cheers Dave.

Hi countycruiser,
The Gore has been run for several years by Tarmac, with the area offices at Dolyhir nearby, they have now relocated these to the Bristol area, the head of the region previously was a local bloke, who kept these quarries busy, now he’s not in charge, the materials are being sourced from other quarries, also a lot of the hauliers are being squeezed out by the look of it.I look forward to seeing those Tilcon pics.
Cheers Dave

Cheers Dave.
Hi Dave, I worked out of Fourways but we started to leave our area and worked all over the place,i can remember Norman on the weighbridge,he must be well retired by now.

Hi cc,
Norman retired about four years ago,he went on till he was 66,to complete 50 years in the quarry, most of those in the weighbridge at the Gore,he did work in the head office at Kington for a short while, when the quarries belonged to The Old Radnor Trading Company. He lent me some photo’s of the Gore, taken in the Mann-Abell days before Tilcon, when I drove out of there.Norman and a lot of the older blokes are shaking their heads in disbelief at the goings on now.
Cheers Dave.
Hi Alan,
Strinds is off to the left, as you come up the A44,from Kington, its right next to Dolyhir quarry, they both run as one now, still two lots of workings, but using the same static plant etc. They are all run nowadays by Tarmac, which as you know is up for sale again,so who knows, there’s a lot of worried people, concerning there jobs etc.
Cheers Dave.

Tarmac bought Rhayader quarry years ago, then shut it,they seem to have a policy of buying to close, stops the competition I suppose.

They have just made 70 redundant from the offices up here and moved it all to Retford which i think was Hoveringham’s head office… Hendre closed…Trimmrock closed…cobden and crown farm closed,Gawsworth closed and they are just the ones in this area…Allan cc
They have virtually closed Ballidon as well now, made a few lads redundant and transfered a lot of the work to Dene and Cauldon Low. Tarmac call it “mothballing” but we know what that REALLY means!
Pete.
PS Are you the Allan that used to come into Ballidon occasionally, lived at Northwich?
