A couple of C W Griffiths tippers, seen on the A44 Kington bypass, last thursday.
Here’s one of the original Welsh Border Tipper Operators. S W Brisbane of Knighton ran tippers long before WW2, this S type Bedford, with a six cylinder petrol engine. New in the early 1950’s, driven by my old mate John Cross, who lent me these photo’s. John is already featured on this thread. He has kindly sorted some more old pics for me.
Dave the Renegade:
Cheers for that Steve, didn’t have much time to look at thr wagon, my other half took the pic, was down past your neck of the woods today, went to West Sussex and back, not with a lorry I hasten to add, saw plenty of nice moters, including some vintage at Gloucester, as we came back, but there was to much crap on my screen for her to get any pics.Cheers Dave.
Is she not up for leaning out the window Dave
Steve

I would think so Dave. I think John lived up there in that street, when I worked with him on Brisbanes in 1968, this pic was probably taken before he was married, we went to his golden wedding party two years ago, your Dad was there, would think this pic is early fifties.
Cheers Dave.
Another S W Brisbane S type Bedford, this one again driven by John Cross dates from 1959 a perkins engined lorry, one of the last before the TK Bedford replaced them. Pictured being loaded at the Strinds quarry, then owned by the Nash Rocks Stone & Lime Company Ltd.
S W Brisbane drivers pictured with the Boss, the late Stanley Brisbane, with some of the lorries, outside the station road depot in Knighton.pictured early fifties.
Another pic of the newer S type Bedford that John Cross drove. This photo is taken at the Quarry garage opposite Knighton Railway Station, which Brisbanes used as a lorry park, when I drove for them in the late sixties, it was used as a tyre store, for moterway remoulds another Brisbane owned company. Some of the lorries were kept at the Station Road yard, some at Presteigne filling station, the rest which were driven by blokes like myself were taken home. At least you didn’t have any travel expenses, also a lot of us lived close to the Quarries. No rules about operating centres then.
Last pic of John Cross moter of the late fifties.
John Cross Seddon Atki being loaded at the old Nash Quarry near Presteigne. John Lloyd driving the Volvo loading shovel. This quarry is mothballed since the seventies, but is still licensed, with huge reserves of stone, it will reopen one day.
A young Malcom Cross, sat in his Dad’s S W Brisbane Bedford TK.
This young driver now pilots a Volvo Globetrotter.

Hi Dave,
John hadn’t found the photo whe he lent me the last lot featured in this thread, he has lent me a few of that lorry, also a few of the last one he drove, the Y reg Daf. I think he is a bit like me when he comes to finding things, forgot where he put them. If you have any, stick them on here, all the more from other people are always welcome.
Cheers Dave.
This driver Dave Matheson originally from the Knighton area, drove for Roberts of Knighton, he drove for various firms on continental work for years, pictured here at Knighton lorry park when he drove for Murphy’s. Some of you continental drivers must have met him over the years.
