This pic is taken from the cab of one Paul Griffiths Volvo’s. This is Stowfield Quarry, near Coleford in the Forest of Dean.
Paul Griffiths with one of his Scania eight wheelers, tipping stone, into a river ford at Nash near Presteigne.
Paul tipping the load of stone.
Another picture of Paul upending the load into the river.
Paul powering the empty Scania out of the river, onto dry land.
Paul with the Scania parked on dry land, taking a walk back to see how the job is going. It took three loads to do this job, on a sunday morning.
Dave, really enjoying this thread. Perhaps CW Griffiths would make a good feature for Trucking magazine? They have an 8page story on Amos Meer, in this months edition, another old haulier who does tippers (amongst other stuff). One things for sure, they wouldn’t be short of pictures to use!
I notice the fleet is now mostly Tarmac colours, is there a particular reason for this?

Because unless you join the “Mighty White’s” you have little chance of getting any work, at least in my neck of the woods. One of the reasons why I was made redundant in 2002 was the quarrys decision to use contract hauliers, they even had a lad come from Scotland with a contract six wheeler to work from our quarry in Derbyshire! It pushed the “old retainers” out I am afraid.
Pete.

Hi Hammer and Pete,
Absolutely right, tarmac are the colours in the quarries this way, unless your in their logo you are back of the queue. A new Boss of the region will be in charge soon, so its a bit of wait and see. Don’t know about being featured in a mag, C W Griffiths are a working outfit, not really into the publicity stuff, they have always run a very well maintained fleet of lorries. No other operator that I know of keeps their lorries in better shape than they do.
Cheers Dave.
This C W Griffiths Scania, was driven by Mark Preece, another of their long serving drivers. This lorry has now been sold to John Williams & Son, and is featured on this thread earlier. Mark Preece now has a Volvo with the FO7777 plate.

Hi Jonmea,
Thanks for posting the pic, where is it, looks a bit like the A5 towards Betws Y Coed. Don’t know if Paul knows about the way she ended her working life, he follows this thread, so he will see for himself. If you have anymore tippers, stick them on.
Cheers Dave.

Good job that tree was in the way, he would have had a nasty drop by the looks of it.

I thought this might be the case. Its getting like that around here too.
G’day,
Here’s a couple more Dave,I found one more of the Seddon,do you recognise the driver? The other two are at Builth quarry taken mid 80’s,looks like a Leyland Comet,I’m pretty sure it was just used around the quarry. Is the Builth qurry still going mate? Also a picture of the plant with the Comet and a Haulamatic under the bins. Finaly a Cargo belonging to D John Rees, taken over the road from N&A James’ yard in Cross Hands, this was taken in Aug 1995.
Cheers Jamie

Hi Jamie,
Thanks for posting the pics, always good to see the lorries actually in the quarry. Builth Quarry is still going, owned by Hanson nowadays, not that busy, but still working. Paul Griffiths will know the driver of the Seddon, he was driving their Clydesdale out of there, pictured in one of your previous posts on here. As soon as I speak to him, I will put the drivers name on here.
Cheers Dave
Still continuing with C W Griffiths & Sons fleet. This is Pauls Clydedale, which he drove in the early eighties, pictured here after a mishap.
Another pic of the stricken Clydesdale. Looks like she has been in a ditch, remember it happening, but not what or where.
Front end view of the damaged moter.
