One of Tarmac’s own lorries, driven by Andy Stokes, a lorry driver for over 40 years.
On the A44 near Kington.

Dave, when you say ‘one of Tarmac’s own’ wagons do you mean that it is actually operated by the firm? I know Hanson have started bringing some of their haulage in-house, I thought Tarmac coloured trucks were all o/drivers?

Yes Hammer,
They have three at the quarries near me, an artic, eight wheeler and the six wheeler, the other two are pictured on this forum. The quarry was owned by Nash Rocks, probably carried on buying their own, as the boss became M D tarmac western.
Don,t know how long they will keep them as the big boss is finishing in may.

Hammer,
Here are the three that Tarmac operate themselves. The artic doubles as a lowloader truck.

Hi Dave,

The pic of Clive Williams Scania, is it an ex-Griffiths wagon or have Williams had it from new, do you know?

Cheers
Mark

You are quite right Mark, it is one of Griffiths, they only kept it about 6 months. John Williams bought it, as it wa a Gore lorry. If you look back in this thread there is another ex Griffiths Foden following a Scania through the lights at Eardisley. Paul Griffiths sometimes sells a lorry which is only a few months old, one of the other hauliers soon snap them up.
Cheers DAVE.

Richard Bullock once again in Paul Griffiths ,oldest lorry and one of the smartest. A44 Dunfield. Will have some pics of older trucks on here shortly, I realise that these trucks aren’t really old enough for this forum.

An old workmate Phil Edwards on another of Paul Griffiths Volvo’s A44 Dunfield.Over 40 years truck driving.

Roddy Griffiths in one of Paul Griffiths last two fodens, on the A 44 Dunfield.
You can see the back edge of the Gore Quarry, just up from the cab roof.

Emac of Kington run a fleet of nice artics on distance work. They also run a six and an eight wheel tipper.

Hey Dave, is there any chance of pinging up a few older tippers please ?

Be interested to see what else you have mate.

I have asked several operators of old, and drivers, for pics. I am waiting for some to scan. Ive only got one of my own which is a poor pic of a Dodge k series I drove. None of us bothered about pics then, got loads on cars Ive owned, but very little on lorries.

Ianto,
I have known him all my life, his name is Derek Layton, he hauled for Passey Nott for years as an owner driver. Started with a Austin four wheelr flat, then onto a Leyland with a LAD cab, then a Albion Riever six wheeler flat, then the Merc. He then bought a B series ERF 8 wheeler tipper off C W Griffiths and ran out of Nash, he then had an FL7 8 wheeler out of Nash until he retired. His CB handle was the Green Man.
One of his son’s who is a carpet fitter has a Transcontinental which he takes to truck shows. You have just woken me up, Derek was an owner driver all his life, he must have some pics.
Cheers Dave.

S W Brisbane of Knighton had this fleet of tippers, pictured at their Whitehall garage forecourt early seventies.
Brisbane’s ran a fleet of forty lorries in the fifties, then sold the flatbed lorries to Roberts of Knighton, who later bought the tipper fleet in the mid seventies.

Countrywide bulker on A44 Kington bypass.

The Radnorshire Company ran out of the Teme Mill in Knighton, later owned by Ranks, then Dalgetty.
This Leyland doubled as a flat with a demountable tipping body for grain haulage, and ran full time on Dock runs.
Driven by Bob Reynolds.
