My favourite era for motor’s, that picture of that Foden and the one’s you posted of McPhee’s Atki’s sum the era up perfectly, don’t know why these motor’s appeal to me as most of them were burnt up before I was born! Cheer’s Pete

I only drove one of the metal cabbed foden for a short while , good seating position and as a bonus there was a second heater under the driving seat so i got two blasts of tepid air , but only when climbing a hill . oh , and the bags on the engine cover didn’t smoulder when the manifold got hot . Dave

We had a few S40 Motor Panels cabbed Foden at Ballidon and Kevin, they were recabbed from S50 half cabs by North Riding Garages at Middleton St George.

Cyril Forrester had a couple of those big metal cabbed Fodens , one of them overturned near Leominster loaded but when righted not a drop was spilt ! thaks again Trevor .

That comet , or one identical went to buxton . Walter Gill , od at hill head bought one about 1960 , it was quite a lorry for it’s day 60mph top speed when the fodens were trundling around at 28mph . Did you notice the derbyshire registration ? I think hughes bros must have registered all the fleets through the buxton office . Dave

Hi Dave,
I noticed the Derbyshire reg, and the Comets was fast motor’s but the brakes was not up to much apparently,

As one of my many employers said when I complained of poor brakes, “I pay you to go, not stop”.

Hi pete , love that S20 Fodens of Bulmers ! , and i bet Dave would have remembered that unusual Leyland van of Kington laundary !! regards Keith .

Hi all. Pete and Keith my father had one of those Leyland’s with a drop side body. It was on day work with a civil engineering company. It had a Ricado engine, the second one he had, the first being in a brand new Commer. Both were pigs to start especially in the winter and would drink the easy start. They went well when they were running, very noisey early direct injection if I remember correctly. This was in the early 70s.

Regards Paul.

Morning Keith,
That was my thought’s exactly, only one man who would know about that motor! That style of Foden was more modern,in my view, than the mickey mouse cab, Cheer’s Pete

A strange looking “light commercial” with an LAD cab grafted on, payload must have been dire, a fine example of how Leyland had lost the way! Cheer’s Pete

Pete, I remember those mini-LAD cab jobs. I’m sure they were marketed as a one-ton van IIRC. Cheers, Robert
