Good to see Dennis Charles Foden again from Direct transport . one of the tidyist firms in Shotton , tjhank you trevor .

Trevor,
Who was the company that had red F10’s from Llangollen, heading north on A5 their garage was on the left just before traffic lights in town centre, very small building just about fit a unit in there! Think it may have been where these new flats are built, Cheer’s Pete

Hello pete , yes DeeValley transport , and i have been racking my brains who the owners name was , and i cant remember ! They did a bit out of Shotton but mostly Port sunlight andMonsanto at Acrefair . They started with Sentinels ,and they had Atkis as well , thank you Trevor ,

A lot of Dee Valleys Fodens ended up on the showmans circuit , regards Keith .

Trevor/Keith,
Below pic off E-bay of S20 Foden reg no. 2698 UN 1962 with a Carrimore trailer, it worked out of Van den Bergh in Bromborough, Trevor was the gaffer of Dee Valley Dave Edmond Barton? (I’ve been on company house register), the Volvo pic is borrowed off another thread on TN, Cheer’s Pete

Hello Pete , what a lovely old picture i have not seen that before , those insulated trailers were used for Van den bergs for margarines and stuff ,
have to say that Barton does not ring any bells , but i think it was a name like Ritson from Liverpool that bought them out . thank you again pete , Trevor

Hello Pete,

That Foden was about a 62/63 one, and same as mine had a 6LX in her. How I tried to get my Uncle Harold to buy a pair of air horns like those for my lorry…no chance…nor the headboard…

Like mine, she was a mechanical actuated splitter, (a blooming big wire cable going from the lever, down behind the dashboard, to the depths beneath!

Keep it well oiled, that was my mantra…actually the split was as easy as the late air actuation on my Micky Mouse…people wax lyrical today about the twin splitter Eaton, yet in its day the Foden set up, (once learned), was so quick, and with the torque spread of the Gardner superb to use…Ive romped away from “johnnie foreigner” up Alpine passes with my S20, and S21, even though I was well down on horses!

Lovely cab that S20, so warm, (despite no heater), and really a calm place to work…Ive seen France, Italy, and Sicily unfolding like a cinema film through those twin windscreens.

Dee Valley, Regent Street LLangollen…Ive been thinking about them today, while braving the Birmingham mayhem…The top man was Joe Pearson, and his wife Margaret. The cheques came from Julie Shellard. Dave Burton was, (in my day), Transport Manager, but he gained a seat on the Board, then there was also David Edwards.

When the yard was full, (and it was tight), you had to go down the A5, turn left into into Hill Street, then left and left again, via Willow Road, and Vicarage Road, and park up, and walk back to the yard to be called in…I used to walk over the river Dee Bridge, and up the old canal to where the Chain Bridge was, and the Dee entering the Canal to flow down to the treatment works at Hurleston, so the inhabitents of Chester could drink it!

My Grandfather was on the “Company Packet” from the Shropshire Unions Ellesmere Wharf, and a regular trip was from Ellesmere, to LLangollen, then the Company Directors would cross the Chain Bridge, and catch a special train back to Chester. The Chinese cook from the Packet took his life under a tree by where the Chain Bridge Hotel is by cutting his own throat, on one such trip…

Funny how a picture of an S20 Foden can trigger such memories…but mine did more miles than that Dee Valley one…and was far more handsome in Brunswick Green, Cream, and Post office red…the Italians used to stand back to admire her in the bright sunlight of Sicily…and there was not too much of that in Llangollen!

Cheerio for now.

Hi Keith, I remember they had Volvo’s last as two of them overtook me on the A5 between Llangollen and Corwen!! Remember the early Roadtrains they used to put a tag axle on them. Have not seen any with the transporters on though,
Larry, I noticed they both had Scottish regs, Inter-city perhaps?

+1 Mate, Trying to get Friday off work to pay my respects.

HI, Folks , IIRC, Pearsons a Liverpool company ,took over DEE Valley then the quality of motors went down hill, They put new Volvos in the fleet but the shine went off and the paint work went dull , just a bit of usless info ,Cheers Barry

Evening all,

Barry, you are quite right about Pearsons, but Dee Valley was really a Liverpool operation, that happened to run out of Llangollen, way back from its inception in the 1950s.

Barry, your comments are never useles

Cheerio for now,

When I was a nipper, I remember that Dee Valley’s motors were the first I had seen fitted with air horns. I thought it must have been a “proper” truck driver to have a shiny 8-wheeler with air horns!
