A milk tanker driver taking a break by the A44 west of Langurig, Mid Wales.

This ERF of J E Matthews of Coleford was used to carry the coffin of Graham Ball a well known Hereford lorry driver to Hereford Crematorium yesterday.
Graham drove for Unicorn Transport and P M P Transport and other Hereford haulage firms. RIP Graham.

Knills Commercials were using it when Neil drove it Graham. Probably ended up being broken, or shipped abroad. Bill Knill sold a lot of used commercials to other dealer and dismantlers.
Cheers Dave.

Hiya,
Dave now this does look like like a lorry that has earned it’s keep nicely “mucked
up” and complete with a few battle scars, I drove one identical to this although
it had originally been a double drive heavy hauler and reduced to a two axle job
to reduce the weight so it could do 20 tons on general haulage a great old “cart”
though but becoming very unreliable in it’s twilight days finally giving up the old
ghost in the vicinity of Newport horse racing course and having to be returned
to home base in a very undignified way on the back of a lowloader and myself
having returned by train and bus a couple of days before with the compliments
of a travel warrant furnished by Newport BRS depot, she did hit the road again
but sadly only as a shunter working “round the doors” of the local steelworks.
thanks harry, long retired.

Neils Atki with another load.

A lucky driver with this one in 1981. Caught the edge of the snow on the side of A44 near Neil Richards home on Radnor Forest.

Thanks to Neil for another pic of the Atki he drove.

His luck was out there, a couple of feet and he would have missed that tree.

Hi Dave,

Ray Bent R.I.P. drove that vehicle for most of her life, and probably the last one to drive her!
When she ended her working life Jean sold her to a breaker near Much Wenlock? ( Ron Evans ) ■■?
I went up there and bought her back off him and owned her for quite a few years with the aim of restoring her back to her original glory, but,■■? It would of been nice to of had one of Sharples vehicles in preservation, as they were quite a big fleet at one time.
Anyway I sold her on. I wish now that I had kept her as she was in quite good nick for her age.
I wonder if she still survives ■■?
I have the original Factory Build Sheet for the vehicle here somewhere !!

BVJ 831L was one of 3 Fodens that arrived new from the factory the same week in Sharples yard.
2 units and an 8 wheeler.

The 8 wheeler came as a LWB flat bed used on steel, later converted to a tipper and the used on sand and steel Midland / South Wales. Reg number TCJ 701 J. There are pictures of her on this thread.

The other unit was involved in that terrible accident at Whiney Toll Bridge where Jack Watkins lost his life. R.I.P. Jack. The vehicle was written off, she was just over 12 months old if I remember correctly!!! Reg number TCJ 699 J.

BVJ 831 L was used as a shunter for a couple of years before being registered ( mainly I used her for taking trailers for M.O.T. tests on trade plates, ect )

All 3 were fitted with Gardner 180 engines and 12 speed gearboxes.
The units had 5.2 ratio diffs later changed to 4.75, more suitable for our part of the country!!!

Best regards Jack Cook.](http://postimage.org/)

Morning Jack,

Thanks for adding the history of the Foden Jack. Was Jack Watkins any relation to Hoppy ? I remember that tragic accident at the railway bridge by Hendersons. One of Kendricks or Oliver Harts involved if I’ve got it right. Good to see you on here again.
Cheers Dave.](http://postimage.org/)
