Used to take pulp out to Rouen and load logs back for Chantler timber with Ford’s. That was back in my Punchards day’s, wasn’t it one of Ford’s that lost a layer of bales on the M6 last summer? I carried them once at Punchards and every time I went under a bridge I braced myself lol. The agent said I MUST load it 4 bales high and MUST BE SHEETED. Measured it at 16, 3, told the agent yeah yeah it’s sheeted hmmm. Farmer wasn’t bothered and it was the middle of summer so it wasn’t gonna get soaked.
Hi Andrew , yea I know all about the straw load lost between j1 and 2 on the m6 and no it wasn’t me !
I was loading straw at a farm in Essex , the farmer started putting them on , " looks a bit high that I said let me check " so out with tape measure sure enough nearly 17 ’
Anyway load rearranged to get the height down , just then my boss rings , farmer telling him the previous load was too high and was now sitting in a pile on the m6 (or words to that effect )
The farmer did feel guilty but I said no way was it his fault , purely down to the driver . Poor Wayne had not long been with us and was his first load of straw , more fool him tho for not owning a tape measure
Onto the timber for chandlers , one of my most worrying jobs was taking some oak from France which had been dropped in our yard , out to a chap. Near bunbury.
I set off having got some quite brief step by step directions to the destination . This turned out to be a tiny farm up a stupidly tight dead end road / track . To say I was stressed by the time I got there was an understatement
Wasn’t helped by a lady who lived down that road saying I’m sure they haven’t had anything that big down here before
Anyway the customer turned out to be a nice fella , made me a coffee etc and was chatting . He said punchards used to deliver there but weren’t too keen because of the low trees battering the cabs etc , he did say the gaffer at punchards once delivered there whilst there was snow on the ground and got stuck for a while .
Maybe you delivered there Andrew , don’t remember his name but he had a workshop and made stuff from green oak , garages porches etc
Cheers Mike
