I thought of Tracy Read, Keith, but from memory his were short wheelbase tippers. W J Layton of Presteigne had a Dodge, but his was on timber and livestock.

If memory serves me, I thought Howard Coleman ran only Bedfords?
Knowing Maurice it probably started life as something different than a tipper! All three were featured in Heritage Commercial magazine a while ago.
Edited to say that I have just spoken to Maurice and part of the truck came from near Ross on Wye where it was a flatbed carrying hay. Other bits (cab parts, axles etc) came from Malta, as did his Comet cab, and I guess that he built the body himself, again as he did with his Comet. Hope this helps!

Pete.
Hinton’s from Leomister could have run a Dodge like that.
Cheers Dave.
One of the legends of the Gore quarry, the late Bill Jones seen with a new Albion Clydesdale, the second that he drove for Mann-Abell, the first was a new G reg. Bill later drove Foden eight wheelers for Tilcon after they bought Mann- Abell. Although Bill was one of the fastest drivers of his day, my memories of him were, he always had time to help young drivers such as myself with tips of where certain depots etc were.a good bloke RIP Bill…
bubbleman:
Hi Dave,as requested here are the Gammonds ERF shots,Cheers Bubbs,
Sorry to bring this back a few pages, but is that a twin wheeled midlift or just something in the pic making it appear that way? Never seen one like that before!
You’ll notice that it also has LHD and a roof-mounted air-con. I think this one was a bit of a one-off. I’ve found another picture of it below,
which shows quite clearly that it is a mid-lift (unusual in those days). When I asked about this unit on the ‘Left-hand-drive B-series ERF’ thread,
Bubbleman sent me the following reply: ‘Hi Robert,I believe the Gammonds ERF was used previously for a racing car outfit, I’m sure they told
me it was black in colour and was liveried in John Player Special writing,Cheers Bubbs’.
Hope that is some help. Robert

Gammonds have over the last 50+ years run many varied lorries. American British, all sorts of unusual vehicles.
Cheers Dave.
Dave, when Tilcon took over Gore and Mancetter (both ex Mann Abell quarries) did they keep any of those Albions on at Gore in Tilcons blue and red? When I started with Tilcon in April 1975 they were respraying some yellow Reiver’s in Tilcon colors but I think that they were sent back to Mancetter quarry where they were later replaced with Foden eight leggers and a couple of Leyland six wheelers. I think that Wilnecote Brick and Tile at Tamworth also came into the Tilling group around that time, had they been a Mann Abell company previously?

Hi Pete,
They had a couple of six wheelers at the Gore for a short time which were ex Forest of Dean wagons, but I think they were Mann-Abell wagons. Mann-Abell only ran Albion Clydesdale four wheelers which travelled all over the place, going regularly to Hampshire etc. Tilcon put Foden eight wheelers into the Gore soon after they took over. Some of the drivers only had class three licences and went for test to get a class two licence. Several of the haulage contractors had six and eight wheelers in there.
Cheers Dave.

Thanks for that Dave, Tilcon seemed to concentrate on eights though Ballidon had some AEC Marshals (tipper and tankers) that were disposed of in the early 70’s to be replaced by Foden S50 half cabs. The OD’s supplied plenty of four wheelers and a handful of sixes though!
