I go too our main library in Shrewsbury they have it every week so I can look at it and I don’t spend a penny. Tony

The nearest library to here is Presteigne Tony. I doubt if they have many magazines, its only a small market town.
Cheers Dave.

STRAIGHT EIGHT:

Dave the Renegade:

I imagine that these were a municipal vehicle.

Only two of these left in existance Dave, think they were a concept vehicle with a funny rear swinging-arm / air suspension set up. It had a few advantages but was way to heavy i believe. The other example was long wheelbase boxvan. Not sure but i believe ERF had something to do with the design of the chassis and suspension on this vehicle or something very similar.

Thanks for the info STRAIGHT EIGHT, its always interesting to find out about these vehicles.
Cheers Dave.

Hello Dave, funny old vehicle this one, (and her sister). Built for South Africa, by Quest 80, at Telford. Unique suspension, Mercedes 6cyl power. Stood for ages after the company went into receivership , then Wharton picked them up. Yes they were too heavy for the UK, but the design is very good, somewhere, I have the chassis drawings for No 1, and some original cab “concept” ideas. Mind you, I`ve mountains of stuff…if I can ever sort it out!!!

Cheerio for now.

Hello Saviem,
Do you know wether if it was one of these Quest chassis’ that was shown on the ERF stand in the early 80’s?, from what what i understand, they showed a chassis with the same swinging-arm under air suspension set up as used on the Quest 80. With the weight saving materials used in todays truck building, they could probably make that design viable again. The merc bumper is an improvement on the original, doesnt look to bad… the cab reminds of those EBRO’s that used to be available.

reguards,
Chris.

Hello Chris, yes the design was the same,( but Peter Foden never owned up to it)!!!I believe at some stage Quest, and ERF South African Operation had discussed the project, but it did not go further. There were plans for an “Atlantis” engined version, much heavier spec, and of course Atlantis used Mercedes designs.

When Quest went bump, there were lots of bits lying around, and one spare cab, but with a different windscreen, much higher, and narrower. The whole lot lay there for several years, and no one was interested…me included…ah lost opportunities!

D`ont remind me of Ebro…I once purchased one…it may have worked once or twice!!! Then like a fool I purchased a new Nissan pick up…opened the door one day…and on the plate it said, Manufactured at the EBRO…I read no more, and sold the B… thing as soon as possible, 20mpg, well!!!

Cheerio for now.

hiya,
Always fancied one of these in the pick-up format, have had two
or three Moggie cars over the years usually as a spare motor, and
you could work on them yourself unlike the modern computerised
rubbish which cost an arm and a leg just to get the bonnet lifted.
thanks harry, long retired.

Brilliant vehicles Harry. I drove vans and pick ups for different firms that had them, mainly to come home in when the lorry was being serviced. My uncle was a rep for a big agricultural machinery firm and had about four of them over the years, and being company cars they had a hammering. I can’t remember him having any trouble with any of them. He later had 1100’s when he was a manager, but even though they looked a nice car they didn’t stick it for long.
Cheers Dave.
