hello dave/keith,
must agree ,it looks a bit on the large side to be on a stepframe, but that trailer is no run of the mill stepframe,It was built to walters group spec by nooteboom in 2004,it is the only stepframe built by nooteboom that has a width of 2.9 mtrs 9ft 6 ins in existence,it has a gross operating weight of 94.5 tons in which it is capable of easily carrying around 75 tons so with the 50 tonner that is shown it is well inside it,s operating criteria,it is fitted with 19.5 ins wheels which opposed to 17.5 ins wheels gives greater carying capacity.
kindest regards graham.

Hi Graham
It’s not long ago if you had a 20 ton machine it had to go on a drop well trailer how times have changed. I put 330 Cats and 340 Komatsu’s on a triaxle 48t Nooteboom and 3 axle 144/530 Scania up to 65t gross but with C and U wide with outrigers it’s as big as you would wont to be. Keep the photos coming
regards Keith

I think it was early 1982 Graham. It started snowing on the Thursday night and stopped on the mid day on the Saturday. We had a level three foot of snow here as well as the drifting. The farmers were struggling just to move around their farmyards.
A lot of the quarry loading shovels went out on hire as well as just about every JCB for miles around.
By the following winter most of the farmers had at least one four wheel drive tractor on their farm. The rest soon followed.
Cheers Dave.
In around 1981/82 i can remember it being very bad on the heads of the valley road, especially Brynmawr area and i think i’am right as i was told a big wheeled loader with teeth on the bucket out of vaynor quarry cleared snow from merthyr to brynmawr and down towards gilwern, when it all melted you could see the gouged tarmac, chipped curbs and damaged fences it left behind.whoops!! Rich.

Hi Rich,
They didn’t do that this way in 1982,but in the 1963 storm and a blizzard we had in March 1964 the council hired Caterpillar Traxcavator’s which they normally used on road widening schemes. They carved the roads about quite a bit with the tracks and the teeth on the buckets, but there wasn’t much plant around to hire in those days.
In 1982 most of the quarry loading shovels this way didn’t have teeth on the buckets.
Cheers Dave.

The snow pictures are fab-
I bet that Bedford didn’t take long to rot away with a load of salt in the back!

Cheers Dave.
