Hi boys
Dave I was in that quarry last week picking up a 13ton machine we have had onto McPhillips. They have just put in a new access road directly onto the old A5 but indoing so have taken away the layby that had the butty van in :frowning: :frowning: .I can see there being a bit of fun getting out up the new road as it’s a little steep with water running down it Hope they have plenty of salt

Regards Keith

Hi Keith,
I expect they will sort it.The man in charge of Breedon Aggregates for England is the ex MD of Tarmac for Wales and the borders and he doesn’t mess about,he still lives in Kington. I know the old A5 quite well,it must be just on down from where the Shamrock cafe used to be.
Cheers Dave.

your bang on dave the last thing mr hall does his mess about, they have spent millions at leaton since he took over, new workshop, new secondary crusher, machinery and plant improvements plus the new road which alone almost cost 1 million, which will increase the amount that they can sell from leaton from 450,000 ton a year to 850,000 ton a year.dont think it will be long before plannings in place to work nights which will make a big differance to the quarry and its hauliers, got some big jobs starting in the new year so things are looking positive

He transformed these quarries near me when he was in charge drewster, and I know most of the employees that haven’t left and the hauliers would welcome him back. He has been in the industry since he left business college and is a shrewd bloke.
Cheers Dave.

best thing about him dave his the fact hes interested in haulage and will stop and talk to the drivers whenever and ask how things are and if there are any problems ,will try and help without making promises he cant keep, very approachable and genuine bloke unlike most mds who wouldnt look at an haulier never mind speak to any.

How busy are the tipper operators around your area, Dave? It’s gone quiet around here, this is my second day at home-Boss rang me yesterday and said he was going to pick up an odd load of muck in my wagon at 3pm. That’s why I was at home, no work at all for the 8w he drives. The heavy rain screwed it on Friday as a couple of builders I’d been hauling for didn’t come in, and a job which was meant to be on today’s on hold. Can’t see me doing much now until after Christmas.

Different type of tipper work this way Nathan. There is a lot of tarmac hauled from Strinds/Dolyhir quarries both in the daytime and also some night and weekend work. The Gore which is all dry products ie stone etc is usually busy.
I was talking to Paul Griffiths just over a week ago and he seemed happy enough with the work for their lorries.
There are a lot of artics hauling out of these quarries, also they have Railway sidings to keep topped up at Moreton on Lugg near Hereford which keeps several artics busy and supplements the work for the others if things are quiet.
I would think the weather has played havoc with a lot of sites.Hope it picks up for you soon.
Cheers Dave.

Weather definitly has had a hand in the drop off in work, Dave; We do a lot for local builders who do mostly extensions, landscaping etc and with Christmas coming and the weather, their tidying up now. It looks like a 3rd day at home for me, the boss rings me early evening with instructions and nothing’s come through. I’ve just signed up with a second agency to see if I can get something over Christmas.

Not the best time of year for tipper drivers Nathan. I know a lot this way don’t like the Christmas period, because they are on basic holiday pay,and as you say most of the firms shut sites down for a couple of weeks. Some do make up their time by helping to do some of the bigger repair/refurbish jobs on the lorries while they are of the road for a couple of weeks.
Best of luck with the agencies, they should have something for you.
Cheers Dave.
