Welsh Border and Mid Wales Hauliers 1950's onwards

Dave the Renegade:

Two more fine old British motors.

That Mustoes’ ERF was still working around here until a short time ago. It might still be although I’ve seen a newer 4wheeler of theirs around recently/ I think it does a lot out of Huntsmans at Naunton.

i’ll bet dennis stripped that trader down to get the unladen weight under 3 tons so he could drive it legally , then put all the bits back on . that’s what my boss did with a j type bedford for me . nobody bothered to query the ulw painted on the chassis in those days . we even drained the fuel and the tipping tank and took the passenger seat out to get it under 3 tons , happy days eh dennis , dave

Hi Nathan,
Was the Mustoes ERF seen in the pic originally a tipper. It looked as if it started life as a unit or a long wheelbase flat.
Cheers Dave.

What you on about “H” this was taken only last week!!

Dennis, that’s a pearling photo but tha doesn’t look rayt happy.
It’s got a “EH” Stoke reg so it’s done at least 100 + miles to get to Furness.

Yea Chris,I bought it off Beeches Garage in Handley for £500,managed to sell it about 4 month later for IIRC £600! It was a cracking little motor, had an Eaton 2 speed axle, carried 10ton 5cwt at 14 ton GVW.I think it will be in a bridge foundation around Tebay now! I only ran dust mainly or gravel from local quarries, kept off the M6 workings proper so I believe the little Trader got a rude awakening after I parted with it!! From memory, that shot was taken on a Saturday afternoon behind my mam and dads house on Shap rd. in Kendal could have had a bit of sun in my eyes but I was happy enough in those days!! I was only 20 so my brains were still brand new!! Cheers Dennis.

hiya,
Dennis would you legally be able to drive a motor of 14 tons gross at age 20, I came out of the forces in 1956 capable and army licenced to drive heavy vehicles but being only 20 had to return to the pits (which I’d chucked and done my national service to escape) and couldn’t start driving lorries until age 21,and it was the longest year of my life well I was cab-happy in those far off days.
thanks harry long retired.

You could only drive a lorry under three ton unladen weight under 21 at that time Harry, which still applies, unless you go on the young drivers scheme which enables you to start at 18.
I expect Dennis did the same as a few of us,just drove and tried to look older  .
Cheers Dave

Interesting normal control four wheeler Scania, seen at the show.

A Scania 143 Centurion at thhe Retro show.

A heavy haulage F12 at Gaydon.

There used to be a slogan " put a tiger in your tank ". This one is on a trailer.

The difference twenty years make in the size lorries.

Two of Leylands finest.

A pair of 142’s.

A closer look at Stan Robinson’s unit.

You can get away with FA on this thread ! Suppose it’s so long ago I can’t get done now but I did drive the Trader for about a month prior to my 21st birthday!!No body bothered and I did “gan canny”(even after I was legal) so as not to cause a problem! But I suppose I would have been up ■■■■ creek without a paddle if I’d got into any lumber though, happy days all the same!! Cheers Dennis.

It was a common happening in those days Dennis.I drove a Bedford TK tipper at 20 which was 14 ton gross, only thing was it said on my then car license about being under 21,but that was still on there until it ran out a couple of years later.I think they ran for 3 years IIRC.
Cheers Dave.

This looked a beefy Atkinson Venturer.

Now both of these lorry names have disappeared into the Iveco name.

A typical 1980 lorry with the flags in the windscreen.

Over twenty years old and still looking a modern lorry.

A pair of blue motors.
