Welsh Border and Mid Wales Hauliers 1950's onwards

Three Fodens belonging to James Danter, one of the well known Danter family of showmen pictured at Hereford.

Dave the Renegade:

One a little bit newer again amonst the showmans vehicles, not sure if it was theirs or not, although judging by the disc in the window it probably is…

Anne and I were just sat out on the patio enjoying a nice Chardonay earlier this evening and who pops by----J.R. in his evening suit! on his way to a Cocktail reception at the Queens Hotel in Carnforth!! Apparently he’s had a reasonably good day and weighed in 200 ton of the finest metals this side of the Pennines and this side of the Irish sea! Dropped me 3 books off motors various, one of which is solely devoted to Guy Big J 240LXB tractors(the pages were all blank of course!) The other two are very interesting as one of them is his camoflged VAT records, which I am checking over as he is most meticulous about his “bookkeeping”.In return he has left me a bottle of Grouse Black and a bottle of Glenffidic, aye he’s a grand lad JR,always remembers his old pals and former employer’s who had to endure his antics as a youngster!!! Hic! Hic! how much is left in the grouse bottle? CCCCChhheerss Dennis.

Sounds as if your protege is in the right business to make money Dennis.Scrap is at a high price at the moment.I see loads going down to Hereford every time I’m on that road.I had a copper hot water cylinder here, which I took in and got £50 for it.
Hope you enjoy the drink and the heavy reading in the Big J 8LXB book Dennis, and if you keep slugging the hard stuff, you might just see some words appearing   .
Cheers Dave.

Whats up with your car Harry ? I’m sure Dennis could send a taxi over the Pennines to fetch you to help him drink the lake of malt he has stashed away  .
Cheers Dave.

hiya,
Dave it’s more of a case of what is’nt wrong with the car it breaks down on a weekly basis that’s the Citroen the one the missus drives am looking for another one at the moment a small automatic preferably diesel but they are as rare as chickens teeth, my own car a little Corsa has just sailed through the test i’ts just about bomb proof but the missus although she has a full licence prefers the two pedalers, now forward to the single malt of Dennis’s if it’s on offer i’ll jog over the Pennines anything for a free drink, hic.
thanks harry long retired.

The only Scania we saw among the Showman’s vehicles at Hereford…

There are bound to be some small diesel automatic cars around Harry.A lot of people are surprised when they see that my vans are auto box, although I suppose my sprinter is semi automatic as it has the sprint-shift box where you can use the stick to change gear.Best of luck finding one.I know of several websites that have them,as disabled people use automatics, but most of them are in various parts of the country.Get your good lady to use the bus, then you could nip off to Dennis place and help him sup the malt  .
Cheers Dave.

Dave the Renegade:
What are those shunters like to drive on the main road Tony. They don,t look as stable as a normal tractor unit.
Cheers Dave.

Hi dave, 22mph flat out,
moving our insulation about it handles ok,but heavy loads on it does tend to lean a bit.In the yard a while ago,i was moving 1ton foil rolls and one slid off,i was cornering about 5mph
if you see me give me a wave

Hi Tony,
I suppose as they are not designed for road use 22mph is fast enough.Got to be honest I know very little about those vehicles, they look a good bit of kit for your job with good all round visibility.
Cheers Dave.
