Hi Dave thats William Parry from St Briavels in the Forest . regards kk
Dave the Renegade:
Same bit of road, another different lorry,a FH with a bulk trailer.
Saw an Ardens wagon this morning, 11-reg Merc Axor, now just a plain black cab with small yellow writing on the sides. I’m glad someone has the dough to splash on a new motor at the moment. I’m taking it as a positive sign for the future.

This should be mine. Probably either a blank screen or every picture on my entire computer!
What does it carry? Can you nightout in those or are they rest cabs only?
Tidy looking motor hammer. How does it compare overall to the Daf ?
Cheers Dave.

It carries 15.80 although I’d squeeze 16t on with alloy wheels. I was a bit disappointed initially but I’m used to it now. I’m not forking out for allys in the present environment.
You could spend the night in one and i do carry a sleeping bag just in case although I’ve never had to use it. It would be a bit cramped and its got no night heater or even curtains but I’d do it if i had to. There a bit narrow round the shoulder area and the bunk is pretty hard…I’m painting a great picture here aren’t I!
Has the cab trim started falling to bits yet? We had a Hino on demo a couple of years ago and the seat was cracking up and a couple of switches had fallen off-not a very good impression but when I sat in it I liked the high driving position. I thought the eco button was good (switching the bhp down when not needed).

Overall Dave I’m pleased with it. It is too heavy, especially on dry stone although the rates are so cack there not worth bothering with even if it carried 16.4t like my old Daf.
On fuel its down as well when compared with the Daf. The Daf was at 9-9.5mpg, the Hino is about 8.5-9 but the difference uphills is worth it . On some hills its 2 or 3 times quicker than the old chugger, although i did used to drive it with kid gloves.
The biggest improvement has been maintenance bills. The Hino has been bombproof, touch wood. My maintenance bills are down by about 70% which is exactly why I bought it to be fair. The Daf did me well but she was tired and costing me too much, I couldn’t afford a Volvo which is what I was after so this was the next best thing. I’ve had it 17months and I’ve just passed 200,000kms so she should do me for another few years at least I hope. I’m just hoping the work keeps going just enough so I can keep my head above water.
I’ve got some pics of the old one somewhere, I’ll dig em out and see if I can post em on here now I’ve worked it out!
Have heard that the Hino’s are less expensive on repairs,as their isn’t as much electronics on them as most of the others,They look a strong built lorry. They are owned by Nissan ( I think ) so that makes for a reliable vehicle.Hopefully for you blokes the haulage rates will be increased in line with the fuel increase soon.
Cheers Dave.
Aren’t Hino owned by Toyota as some of the cab switches are off a Hi-Lux? Hammer, your payload isn’t bad for a modern 6x4. We had an Iveco on demo that carried the same as yours, our new Dafs only just get 15.3 (Charlton SuperLites but they’re 14m3-way too big unless we’re on compost) I’ll tell our workshop manager about what you said regarding “bomb proof” Hino as they were disregarded because “they didn’t look strong enough”…

They are owned by Toyota, some of the switches are the same as my missus Corolla and thats 20 years old!
The payload is the worst of the 6’s in our quarry to be fair. The body doesn’t help, the tailboard is proper heavy with chutes in. There are about thirteen 6x4’s in the quarry, most carry just on 16tonnes -16.3tonnes, one Seddon Atkinson with the 7.5L engine gets 16.90 but he’s miles in front of everyone.
My wagon did used to have a muckshift body on it when I bought it and got 15.4tonnes I think the bloke said (i viewed it as a muckshifter but bought it as a chassis cab).
Regards their toughness, if you look at the chassis on them, there are plenty of reinforcements and the rear springs are absolutely massive (about 8 leaves!). There pretty good offroad too I find. I would imagine, if you’d driven a modern Daf CF, Volvo FE etc you might find it a bit old-fashioned. To me, its like a proper truck. Big gear lever, fairly heavy clutch, drum brakes, no cruise control etc.

I forgot to add, the retarder on them is bloody brilliant. Really slows the truck well on the downhills and should save on brake linings. The view from the cab is good too, although it is a bit of a climb up and down if you’re doing 7 or 8 loads a day.
