Another view of the showman’s temporary Hereford homes.

By the looks of these last two shots Dave there is still a good living to be had as a Showman !! Have their motors and trailers got to be tested now ? and that is the reason for the improvement. We used to service a couple of Scotts of Rhyl 8 wheelers when they were in Milnthorpe twice a year in the 70’s and all they wanted us to do was change the oil, grease round and put the odd secondhand tyre on otherwise they were right bags of [zb] but still crept round pulling a couple of trailers and living vans! Always paid in bags of 10p’s,no bill,no vat !!! Cheers Dennis.

Apparently not Dennis.I found this info on the net.

Plating and Testing of Showman’s Vehicles Schedule 2 of the Goods Vehicles (Plating and Testing) Regulations 1988 list the categories of vehicles which are not subject to plating and testing.

Although neither “Showman’s Goods Vehicles” nor “Showman’s Vehicles” are included in the list of exemptions, Engineering plant which is moveable plant or equipment being a motor vehicle or a trailer (not constructed primarily to carry a load) specially designed and constructed for special purposes of engineering operation is exempt. Showmen’s vehicles are generally regarded by the Enforcement Agencies as falling within the engineering plant definition and it is generally accepted that they are not subject to the plating and testing Regulations. In the past the Department of Transport has confirmed that it considers all vehicles which carry only fixed equipment or loose items which relate only to that fixed equipment are not goods vehicles and therefore exempt from the plating and testing Regulations. Although in the past representations have been made to specifically exclude “Showman’s Goods Vehicles” and Showman’s Vehicles”, the Regulations have not been amended. Although the Enforcement Agencies appear to accept the definition of “engineering plant” is carried into the Regulations by adopting the definition found in the Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986, which are somewhat more restrictive than the more generalised wording used in the plating and testing Regulations. Where vehicles have been extensively modified for the carriage of fair/showground equipment it should not be difficult to establish the exemption. However, where very little modification has been made to a vehicle which started its life as a standard goods vehicle, then a Court may require considerable argument to convince it that the vehicle is exempt. It should be noted however that even where the vehicles are exempt from the plating and testing Regulations, vehicles used by showmen are still subject to the road worthiness requirements of the Road Vehicle (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986 and the Road Traffic Act 1988 and as such are still subject to road side checks by the Police and the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA).

Hi Dave, I may take a ride up there on the bike if the weathers half decent !

I’m about 25/30 miles North (ish) of Oswestry and it’s tipping down at the moment and has been for a while :frowning:

we will all be walking about and not knowing each other.

Hi all the rain has stopped now . It’s supposed to stay cloudy but no rain . is there any where that we could meet just to say hi and put the face to the people on this web site ? Tony

Drove past before and looks quite busy with some nice stuff on show. Feeling the pinch this month so couldn’t stretch to £17.00 for my daughter and I to go in :{

It was a bit wet and miserable there an hour or so ago, but as said seemed quite busy.

We did go.A lot of motors there, but the weather was very poor. They are going to have fun and games getting the lorries out on Sunday afternoon.

Just got back in Dave, the other half asked if I’d been to a motocross both me and the bike plastered in mud !

I quite believe you Trev. Its a shame really as a lot of work goes into those shows by the organisers and the blokes with the vehicles. But you can’t beat the weather.Hope they have a better day tomorrow.Trouble is the mud won’t dry up that quick.
Cheers Dave.

A nice Volvo F16 seen at Oswestry Truckshow.

A new Volvo FH at Oswestry.

A line up on the Volvo stand.

After managing to blag my way into Pentons yard to use their wash, by the time I got to the show ground, towed in by a tractor and parked up, my unit was caked in mud…wasn’t overly enjoyable due to the mud everywhere. Got towed out at 8 this morning and went home, wasn’t going to sit in that for another blooming day…

Other than that, the monster trucks were enjoyable!! :grimacing:
