Weight Limits

whats the fine for using a 7 and half tone road it did have access but i later found out you can go in from the other end of the road ,is it just a fine ?

Maximum £1000 according to trading standards, but I think you would be unlucky to be caught, so wouldn’t worry about it to much, I certainly wouldn’t lose any sleep about it.

A classic odd weight limit is the one at flockton Wakefield.
Going northbound there isn’t one, but going south there is

The information provided on the delivery notes and any special instructions plus any means of communication provided by the employer governs what one could be reasonably be expected to know about from which end of a restricted road to approach a delivery point.

If it says 7.5T except for access your fine, you wanted access to the other side of the weight limit

Sometimes limits like that are to stop lorries meeting in the middle and clogging up a tight road. Thetford works like that. One road to Bury is 7.5 ton, and one to Thetford is 7.5 ton, with the reason of keeping traffic apart :bulb:

I got done £50 by a commercial vehicle copper in tilbury didn’t want to know the farmer told me to use that route, more annoyingly the route the copper told me I should have used is also a weight limited road BUT it doesn’t go passed the houses that there having complaints about :imp:

This is the reason for this one as it’s very narrow in a couple of places, it doesn’t seem to apply to bin lorries and busses though. I use it when going from Sheffield to Huddersfield on the way back I take the scenic route and go down the A629,unless it’s snowing of course. Tried that before it’s not fun.

Used to be some of my most entertaining moments of the day driving a Rigid into a weight limited area. I always tried to take note of the expressions on the locals faces! Roads labelled as unsuitable for HGV’s could be just as fun, and my favourite was Green lane near Romsey which had a couple of business down it, and in the middle was a 8’9" bridge. Cars coming the other way would look at you in disbelief thinking you were about to try and go under it!

The 7.5t limit at Eynsham (A40 traffic lights) is stupid. It has no “except for access” sign on it so you are meant to go through the narrowest most unsuitable parts of the village to get to the area with the widest most suitable roads.
Even more daft is the fact that whenever there’s a large construction project going on, planning rules specify that the official route for trucks is via the restricted route. :unamused:

Yeah, I’ve met a bus coming towards and it is a bit tight in places. Just as quick to come off at J37 and pick up A629. Can do our yard at Dodworth to centre of Hudds in 35/40 usually.

Weight limits not applying to busses really ■■■■■■ me off. Not the except for access type, but the weak bridges etc. It’s either weak or it isn’t :unamused:

yeah there is 1 in Leeds that says 7.5, with no access as its a bridge, but you regularly see up to 4 double decker buses, at rush hour times all full with passengers stuck in traffic on the bridge, what does that all add up to?? i know though it was to stop the brewery trucks using a short cut…

Our yard is just on the edge of a 7.5 tonne limi except for access, so technically it’s within it, therefore fine to go through in an artic. It winds me up when there seems to be no need for a HGV restriction, given that the roads are wide, double yellows prevent parked cars narrowing the road, it’s mainly businesses in the area, and there aren’t any weak bridges or low ones. There must have been some moaning sods pestering the council about the big lorries rumbling past their houses.

I was always under the impression that you’d have to be caught red handed to get done for going through a weight limit. The “except for access” card seems just unenforceable. Surely a copper would have to catch you red-handed, pull you, and ask to see your delivery paperwork. If the destination was within it, you’d be fine, if not, they’ve got you. Then you could just make something up, like “I needed access to that shop”, or “I had to go via this address…” Bit of a funny one! :grimacing:

I’ve gone through loads of them so far, and that’s in a month, and very few people even raise an eyebrow except in very posh areas. It’s just part of the job especially as many aren’t signposted properly or marked on the truckers map. You’ll do an awful lot more in the future!

If someone did complain, you could often say - well I evaluated the other options and couldn’t safely get across the town to my destination without going through the 7.5T zone even if you’re not delivering directly within it. Since even your average police have never driven a truck and has some clue it’s like steering the QE2, you might get away with it.

Alternatively, if there’s no sign until you hit the limit and it’s in say a housing area, you could argue that it’s safer to drive through it than try to reverse without a banksman, turn round and head back through. Again it’s a safety issue and since you’re in charge of said truck, your the H&S person making the decision.
