When Large Goods Vehicles pass over a loop set into the road surface, the
weight of the vehicle is recorded whilst it is in motion. At the same time,
the vehicle’s number plate is snapped by a camera. The information is
then sent to Enforcement Officers waiting at a checksite some 10 miles
downstream of the loop. Any targeted vehicle is then directed to an
official weighbridge where it is weighed. Dependant on the degree of
overloading, a prohibition notice will be issued that will prevent any
immediate further use.
The Driver and Operator may also be prosecuted.
How accurate is the system?
Accuracy levels are extremely high. In an organised test, 271 vehicles
were identified by the equipment as being overloaded. All were
overweight. 204 were overweight to the extent that they were
prohibited.
In addition to this, 52 drivers were prohibited for
instances of serious drivers’ hours breaches.
44 prohibitions were also issued for various mechanical defects.

One of ours triggered one in Belgium at 52 tonnes they wud not believe he had an 8 tonne load until they put him over a normal weigh bridge. Turns out he was breaking it the point of the sensors in the road, cant see them being able to take you to court with out going over a normal bridge first if they are this easy to fool

To be caught by weight in motion requires a VOSA attendant waiting to pounce to stop the correct vehicle which rarely happens. 99% of the time if you’re overweight and the checkpoint is open they’ll be too busy dealing with routine checks. It’s virtually unheard off nowadays that a VOSA car will sit and wait specifically for the WIM sensor to go off.

Why would we need a reminder about a system which is pretty much obsolete. We’ve seen it all and done it all so know a lot more about enforcement than you do, despite all your brown nosing with the authorities.

Why would he post /8 year old information?
It allows him to advertise for drivers at Sandtoft, although if he used the free driver vacancy forum he could do that without having to try to attract attention to his posts.
vosa still use the system on the M25 as far as I know, they call it VIPER got it down towards the Dartford crossing and I think they were or are thinking about installing it at leatherhead as well

They have the induction loops on Reigate hill. I’ve looked loads but can’t see any ANPR cameras to accompany it though.
