then it started smoking don’t think it was up to the job to be honest

There’s another thread about that very subject…

Silly question, but would a USB charger plugged into the 24v ciggy lighter work to charge ipad as I can charge phones etc on the move?

Depends on the USB charger. iPads draw a fair amount of current when charging, and if the USB charger is not up to the job they will run on the power from the charger, but the batteries will not actually charge. You will usually see an onscreen message saying “Not charging”. Same will happen if you try to charge an iPad from the mains using an iPhone charger.

When it says it isn’t charging, it still is according to Apple just not at a rate the phone/iPad is expecting.

Looking a bit further, it appears the “not charging” message only shows if you connect it to an insufficiently powerful USB port on a computer (USB 2.0 ports normally only supply 100 mA, or a maximum of 500 mA if the device requests it - an iPad mains charger can supply 2A). If you connect to an insufficiently beefy wall-wart or ■■■-lighter charger, it simply charges at a lower rate (although I think later i-devices will also show an alert about the device being unsuitable and might not work properly).

Thing is, even when supplied by a proper 2A iPad charger, it still takes 4 hours or more to fully charge - a wimpy charger will take much longer, and may not even be able to charge the battery at all if the iPad is in use while connected, as the juice is being used faster than the charger can supply it!

I have a 2000 watt inverter microwave toaster laptop, overnight okay but if I was parked for the weekend of course I would run engine. There choice a £1 worth of fuel ot £120 to start wagon what are you worried about run it. Pointless post

Why is it pointless? He had a question and now he has an answer.

Quite right ,there’s no such thing as a stupid / pointless question, its the answers that required thought.

Putting any device on airplane mode while charging reduces the charging time by around 50%

I never knew that

I tried it a couple of weeks back and didn’t think it made much of a difference , maybe I didn’t have it on for long enough lol

An iPad will give you the not charging if too low amps or too high amps fussy little buggers and take 5/6 hours on 12-24

Beware of USB charging cables.

As had been posted earlier, charging is woefully slow or non-existant if the socket is chucking out 0.1 - 0.5A (100mA-500mA). If you have a car charger that chucks out between 1.0A - 2.1A then everything is okay, providing the USB cable is specced for the job. If it doesn’t have the data pins joined with a resistor, it can’t draw more than 0.5A.

A handy article here: blog.curioussystem.com/2010/08/t … -charging/

Beware of crap car chargers.

I once got a cheapo Chinese charger from a service station as I was desperate. Bad move. Charged initially, but then stopped. It also took out the micro USB port on the phone and I had to get the phone replaced (under warranty thankfully). Don’t use a crap charger as it can damage your equipment.

I also got TWO pukka Motorola car chargers. 1.0A output and rated 10V-33V, so you would think man enough for lorry use. Wrong. Both of them blew their fuses within a short period of use and they aren’t user replaceable in the tip. Both units have their fuses soldered to the board and the two halves of the case are bonded together. Managed to get both carefully prised apart, resoldered in same rated fuses and glued the cases back together. Never had a problem with either of them since.

I also had a couple of these, although I wouldn’t recommend this type as the wire that allows the bend eventually breaks internally. Also it only has two earth contacts that allow a bit too much slop in the socket.

Much prefer this one, as it has earth contacts all the way around and is a snugger fit in a socket, but the seam might need a drop of glue if you have a slightly “fat” car charger that wants to split it open:

get a decent set of jump leads and park so
they can be used
just in case
