expect Temperatures till -20degrees and have propper Tyres as well as Snowchains.

I’d like to think that anyone heading that way is kitted out out (snowchains are a legal requirement) and I always managed with chains and normal tyres in conditions like that. God bless a good night heater!

snow chains are only required to be fitted if the signs advise it, they do not have to be carried but if you don’t have them and the signs are flashing then you must stop driving which is exactly what i would be doing even if i had snow chains, i will never again put a set of chains on my truck just to get moving, park up and watch telly - it’s much safer and more relaxing.

I stand corrected  we always carried them and we used them but horses tend to need delivering to some far flung places. Mr. Coffeeholic knows his stuff, I was just going on the places where there were checks to make sure you had them fitted.

SORRY --““BUT”” you do need to carry the snowchains why because in AUSTRIA they like to fine the driver who does not carry snow chains in winter as required from some of the ir money, this is a fact as we have had drivers fined for ““NOT”” haveing chains,ALSO try to get in to SWEDEN–NORWAY when its winter with out haveing snowchains, you will be escorted to a dealer and then after you have bought some chains you will be asked to contribute to the policeman (FINE) for not haveing chains when entering the country as required by their laws,
another example is from HUNGARY if it is signposted SNOWCHAINS
You will not be allowed into the country with out first buying a set or two,
OR you just wait until the roads are cleared which may take some time,

AT present in the area of DRESDEN::BAUTZEN–and the roads to CEZCH
are only passable when you have snowchains and the police areparking up all those vehicles who have no chains until the roads are cleared,

ANOTHER point why you would be better off with being prepared and haveing snowchains is as follows it will be more expensive to purchase the chains
at the point where you require them , when doing it at your home base, you can get the best offer around at the time,

that’ll be me then - with or without snow chains i will be parking up until the roads clear.

In proper circumstances you have to put snow chains on just to be able to watch TV. When there is water on ice and high winds truck might start sliding even when stationary (in Norway you might have best changes for this). Just like with warm tyres as there don’t have to be much of a slope for truck to beginning to slide.

Are you sure about Sweden? I thought snow chains aren’t mandatory in Sweden.

given some of the previous information passed on, if you told me it was night time outside i would have to look out of the window and check so as neil (coffeeholic) has supplied trucknet with very accurate information for a number of years (about 3) without your help and has usually been correct i will go by what he has posted because i trust his research more than yours despite the fact you claim to be austrian british.

I had two deliveries in Verbier Switzerland just before Xmas and got very stuck in snow, if I had snow chains they would have been no good as the clearance between the tyre and side of truck is less than the thickness of chains…I had to get a tipper to tow me around the town to do my deliveries.

Police asked me why I didn’t fit chains, but when I explained they would not fit he seemed happy to let me carry on with what I was doing

Winter tyres are strongly recommended by Austrian motoring clubs. When there is snowfall, winter tyres or snow chains are required by law on some mountain passes, and occasionally also on motorways. This is indicated by a round traffic sign depicting a white tyre or chain on a blue background.
