I always wear a seat-belt both in my car and in the lorry, I didn’t wear one in a lorry for some time but feel uncomfortable without it now.
If other people choose not to wear one is not something I bother about.

Ive always worn one in the car and when i started driving HGVs i did too, then for some reason i just stopped wearing a seatbelt in the truck Why i dont know, probrably got irritated wearing it on long journeys, i knew it was illegal, just didnt think i wouldnt get caught.
Then sods law earlier this year i got pulled by the old bill on the A272 as i turned off the A23 for Cowfold, they had a spotter on the bridge checking cars and trucks for people on phones not wearing seatbelts etc, got a £60 non endorsable fine for my troubles Since then the belts been on.
The choice of the individual in my opinion, and not a thing to do with the law, regardless of what the law states.
Make a decision, live with your decision. Take responsibility and all that jazz. I fail to see how its morally right to wear one if the only risk you are taking is to yourself. I’m not going to feel guilty about burdening the NHS with scraping me off the road, as they waste enough money on other things I do not consider important.
Never personally felt i’ve needed one in a truck, if it catches up to me one day, i’ll not be moaning to anyone about my choice.
Sitting in the back seat of a car and not wearing one is different. I also wear one when driving a car, generally.
My motorbike doesn’t have one, so to my mind if I can take that risk, i’m entitled to take any other risk I feel like, so long as it does not affect the lives of others by causing them injury, harm or loss.
Well said Wild Goose - I agree!
Truth hurts i guess BIG LAD!!!

Do you know what the most disturbing thing about the so called PROFESSIONAL drivers moaning about wearing seat belts is, if you have no regard for your own safety then i’m pretty sure they couldn’t give a stuff about the other road users around them and unfortunately that means me. I dread to think about the condition of vehicles they drive, i hope VOSA stop you everyday and fine you to the hilt for not wearing a seat belt. The Sarge:
Because, dimwit, I would have been stuck 8 feet in the air by a single strap around my waist. Now, I’m a big lad, and I think it’s safe to assume that it would have caused me injury - you try it sometime. Now run along and play with the buses - there’s a good lad…I’m bored with you now - have a nice life, just don’t annoy me anymore please

Around 15 yrs ago i had a car crash which resulted in me being trapped in a burning car because of a seat belt,I was very lucky to get out alive… so how can a seat belt save your life at the same time as almost taking it![]()
About 10 years ago I had a crash in one of these:
and I hit the steering wheel with the base of my nose (exactly between my eyes). Result - bad plum and dizziness for a few days.
Doctors says a few cms more and I would crash my face, ending with an ugly mutant face if I was lucky and with a bits of bones in one of the most important part of the brain if not.
Seatbelts helps you in about 91 % cases, makes things worse in about 3% and the rest is when they don’t do any difference (I am to lazy to google it, I give the numbers from memory, google and correct me if I wrong).
This is not a bookmakers office when slimmer chances makes higher prizes. It’s about your life.
One thing wonders me: why guys who DONT wear seatbelts seems to be proud about it, when for these who are it’s just the normal thing? I have my answer, but prefer to keep it for myself…
Orys, I’m not proud about not wearing a seatbelt - a question was asked, and I answered it. I learnt to drive a car before it was made law to wear a belt - but I did because if it was good enough for the examiner it was good enough for me - and I’ve had my life saved in a car by a full harness a few times (used to rally a bit). I always wear a belt in a car, but my one experience in a wagon was that I was better off without it. The reason I wasn’t wearing it at the time was purely because the ratchet was buggered and it wouldn’t work. I do NOT advocate not wearing a seatbelt - it’s just my choice.
As a follow-on - since being involved in this thread I have tried wearing my belt in the wagon… every time I hit a bump or a camber on the road I start sweating and worry that the whole thing is going over again - not a valid reason for anyone else, but good enough for me.

Well, I did not meant you in particular… But since you mentioned it, there is one lorry where I do not wear the seatbelt:
It’s because seat is on air suspension, but seatbelts are fixed to the wall, and I can’t adjust it properly to my height, so every bump I am smothered (is that good word? Or should I use choked or something) and I do not consider it a pleasure
But it’s a desing fault, not the seatbelt idea fault

This is the best advert for wearing a seatbelt I have ever read and very well expressed.
Thank you.

Nick.
