Weak Bridge - Except empty vehicles

Came across this today at Kentford in Suffolk.

Came off A14 west bound headed for Red Lodge, a route I’ve previously used turning opposite the tractor dealer.

Found signs advising that there was a weak bridge and 3t MGW weight limit - Except empty vehicles.

I was empty but still weigh 16.5t so decided I’d better skip it and took the lengthy route into Newmarket and back up to the A11.

How the hell do you interpret that sign?

a bridge stating 3t MGW weight limit - Except empty vehicles means the following, If I drive a vehicle with a maximum gross weight (i.e. its maximum weight including load that can go on the road) of 7.5t, but when it has no load and is empty weighs 3tons or less, it can cross the bridge.

Ah yes, I hadn’t thought of that. Bit difficult to enforce though.

There’s so many weak bridges around now, but you never see them being repaired/strengthened/replaced.

It won’t take much for one to just collapse and cause serious injury/death before the government say it should never have happened.

Just look at Italy year before last…

And I was wondering last week whether I should risk this one in a relatively empty 16 tonner:-

I decided against risking an incident.

Thoughts?

Almost as bad as signs ive seen on some side roads

Saying 6ft6 width.
Except for access.

I’ve never been down them .
they do confuse me. Is there a 6ft6 limit or is sign just there to put you off?

Some of my jobs take me down such places so I take those as it’s narrow and difficult to pass if you are driving a wider vehicle, however you can get through if you have to get to a property within that stretch of road.

The blue ones that say unsuitable are advisory ones and I take those as a recommendation not to rather than an instruction / order
