Can’t wrap my head around this. I’ve got three reels of paper on board. Drove down from Immingham with them, they are coming with me to Ealing, Dunstable, Crick, Nottingham and to Rotherham before finally getting them off around Doncaster. Just seems a massive waste of diesel when they could of gone on a local run tomorrow.
Well there will probably be a reason for it. Unless you’re paying the excess wasted fuel, who cares? Its the companies problem.
And before anyone starts with the “if they cut down on fuel wastage they could raise the hourly rates” comments, lets be honest, no they wouldnt. It would go to company profits and the wage would still be the same as it is now
When I started, I was told “Don’t try & work it out”
Very good advice - as the people we drive for don’t have a Scooby doo about logistics/transport whatever you want to call it,
But they make money (and waste a lot) - but we get paid & no longer question it,
An example, just before Christmas, a load of Salmon was sent down overnight from Scotland - To Bow, East London,
I took a truck from West Ham, 10 minutes away, loaded it all up, took it to the Midlands,
That night,They sent half of it back up North, and half of it back to my depot in East London, to go on vans next day to deliver.
As I was loading I joked with a fellah, I read the addresses on some of the polystyrene boxes, that these were going up the M1 with me, I was coming back that afternoon, and when I got back, the night trunker would take the same truck back to where I dropped them off, and bring them back again next morning.

I should mention I’m at Beaconsfield services.
Can`t see what the problem is your still going to cover virtually the same ground, with or without the reels, why use another motor if you have room on yours, makes it a better payload, also considering your not paying the fuel
In all honesty Rotherham drop hardly miles out of your way.
When I first passed, and got my first driving job, the TM had a few sayings. One of them was ‘I’m paid for the thinking, you’re paid for the driving’. That’s exactly what I do, end of day I don’t pay for the diesel.

I think the OP’s point was that it’s a waste of diesel to carry the weight over such a long distance before doing the delivery, rather than putting it on a different vehicle (possibly a dedicated run) that takes a more direct route to the delivery point.
I don’t know how much a few tonnes of payload would add to the fuel consumption of the trip.
3 reels will no doubt pay hardly anything, so no point putting them on a dedicated vehicle.
As you are finishing in Rotherham, and going back to Immingham you are really delivering them to Doncaster for nothing.
Maybe if the OP had thought, he/she would be wondering why he is doing the run back to front, and not loading back, though I would hazard a guess it is to do with booking times…
Given up trying to work it out, went today up to Crewe down to Hanley back up to Chester then down to longton, went past longton at 7.30am didn’t tip till 1pm
But hourly paid so happy days.
Its amazing the money that gets wasted in logistics, but then its also just as amazing how its squandered in all sorts of industries. Usually the bigger the organisation the more likley the chance of wastage.
I used to go from Birmingham to Liverpool every day in an 18t box and 90% of time I was carrying 1 or 2 pallets totaling no more than 300kg. Once I went up with just a small parcel, though it still had to sealed in the back of the truck .I then used to come back to brum carring a few empty pallets.
Recently I drove a round trip of 70 miles to collect a 2kg casting. I would have been cheaper to post it!
But who cares ? as long as your paid its not your problem.
Our lot send 3 empty deckers down from Glasgow to Normanton 6 days a week to pick up loads. If that’s not a waste of fuel, then I don’t know what is. Apparently they still make money from the job too.[emoji15]
airfreight is quite often flown into a different airport than booked so has to be trucked to the right airport to be cleared when you look at final destination you know it will be coming back in a day or so. when its heathrow and manchester you think why the f…
I knew a guy who did a few shifts for Royal Mail,
One night took a decker to Exeter, nothing in it, just a label to deliver, which went on the passenger seat
Indeedy, there’s no need for the driver to do any thinking;
all the thinking is already done for him.
So just leave it to the donkey heads in the office.
some other Ways to waste Fuel
We have Drivers who dont fill up. Looks good for them as Fuel consumption by Milage is low. They put Nozzel in and go back to Cab watchin when Gauge shows nearly Full. Next Driver gets the Handkiss then.
Now if we drive past Pump and see a Driver with that we stop to talk to them or ask Questions about a Customer to make them miss when Tank is full. "Its a Sign there Dont let Pump alone as automatic Switch-off is Faulty"
Works very well. Manager has to write every other Day a Report
