Wasn't expecting that whoah!

Hi Guys,
trundling down the A1 behind an artic, keeping a good 2 lorry lengths behind him, he puts his indicator on to move to the outside lane. Thinks ok he’s overtaking something, checks my mirrors to pull out , no can do as there is a car just passing my trailer. Looks up and there is a wagon pulling out of a garage forecourt whoah!!!
Had to slow down rather quick, half expecting a bang at the back end. Few miles down the road same thing happened again, luckily this time the tanker stayed on hard shoulder and I didn’t have to almost stop… Makes me wonder if I could have stopped if I’d been tailgating like some do!!!

Err…

Twice in a short period? If you’re not seeing these situations due to the vehicle in front then you are too close to it. Two truck lengths = around 33 meters, that’s about half the stopping distance for a truck doing 50mph on a dry road.

Are these the places near Doncaster? A road like A1 should have proper acceleration and deceleration lanes.

north of Doncaster yes, can’t remember exactly where
the point I was trying to make was that the wagon coming out of the garage didn’t use the filter lane because he had been flashed out, therefore he had ony just set off when entering the carraigeway, so regardless of how far I was behind the lorry in front, I still had to almost stop as it was busy and I had nowhere to go to avoid him. The second time the tanker thought about entering the carraigeway but saw me and kept in the filter lane thus avoiding a repeat. Just dont think it’s a good idea to flash someone out on a busy road when they haven’t even acheived any speed. I’d think twice before pulling out from an almost standing start.

It probably should have, but it hasn’t, and in those circumstances shouldn’t we drive to the conditions?

They have already spoiled the A1 with all those flyovers and new junctions, it is almost as boring as the M1 or M11 now

But if you hadn’t been so close you would, or at least should, have seen the situation earlier giving you more chance someone would let you out, the other truck found space, or more time to slow down. Great distance equals less harsh braking so is kinder to the vehicle and load and lessens the chance of it going pear shaped.

Increase the distance you are following vehicles by and these sorts of incidents are less frequent and far less dramatic.

It might just be me, but I don’t find roundabouts that exciting.

I like them, it takes the boredom out of it, for the same reason I prefer national roads in France :stuck_out_tongue:

sounds like the barnsdale bar services a mile north past J38  in the dip (shell garage) yes you have to be awake on that stretch of road or have ya foot over the brake pedel.

from J37 to the M62 interchange its a very bad stretch of road had a few near episodes me sen on my run

Is this the place?

If it is then it looks like there’s enough clues there to make me think the wagon in front is pulling out coz of the services, not over-taking. Looks like the guy pulling out should have seen you as well though.

It’s just after a long sweeping bend its just a bad stretch of rd not much you can do apart from be switched on and leave sufficient stopping space.
A safe stopping distance isn’t 2 lengths or even 3 it’s the space it takes you to stop and whatever speed in whatever conditions. A simple equation to remember 2 much speed+2 little space+some ■■■■ doing the unexpected=squeaky bum time.

The google map is spot on, and as you look at it imagine the red lorry not using the slip road and coming straight onto the carraigeway. It’s a site to make anyone jump, looked in mirror admittedly a bit too long as trying to establish whether or not I could pull out, looked up saw that. Ok i didn’t have to screech to a halt but I had to slow down rapidly. Why not use the slip road and why the need to flash him out as it was quite busy?

You sound like Rog!! You’ll be preaching the highway code at the kid next.

cheers Rob, actually I’m 46

Wow, looking at google map you can see a red arctic pulling out in the photo.

I have to agree you were to close to truck in front it is a hazard if you couldnt see it clearly you should of dropped off to allow you the space to see …

Looking at google again and moved down the road you can clearly see why the red lorry has to pull into the carraigeway to get out as there is not enough room to get the trailer round the corner. You can see at the 300yd countdown marker that the lorry is sat waiting to pull out, looking for a gap in the traffic, this is a poorly designed exit for hgvs, the garage the other side of the road has a much better exit. At 200 yds with a lorry in front you wouldn’t be able to see him because of the slight bend in the road. Even if I was futher behind the lorry I don’t think it would have made much difference to the situation, if I’d been much further back someone would have pulled into the gap.
