If this is in the wrong part of the forum, please let me know.
Firstly, I wholly apologise for posting on this forum, I’m not a professional driver. I’m actually a newly qualified driver, but seeking professional advice.
The advice I’m needing is two things mainly. I’m looking for a decent Dash-cam, but was hoping to get one which records both the front and back of the car, and starts up with the engine, not being plugged into the cigarette socket.
The other item I’m wanting to know about is a little more in-depth.
I read the night I signed up, about idiot drivers, and as a cyclist I experience some of the morons on the road. However (I realise this may open floodgates), I’d like to be as safe as possible on the road, so do any of you have advice as to how to ensure I don’t join the idiot BMW / white Audi driver club, aside from not owning one of those makes?
As a new driver you best bet is to continue learning and one of the best ways is to go for the advanced test so look into joining your local IAM or Rospa group
Just so you understand what Rog is saying… He is a member of I, A, M, Institute of Advanced Motorist. Worth taking his offer up if your in the area. He’s a nice chap.
This is my first post! But I’ve got some experience of the situation your in. dash cam wise, if you want it hard wired into your car, obviously it’ll be most costly, personally I tapped into the feed at tthe back of the cig lighter socket, and ran an extension to another hidden cig socket in the glovebox, and I just leave it on now, permanently unless I’m got using my van for a spell.
And as for the driving experience, ROSPA, superb way of driving, you’ll be so so so different once you’ve had a few lessons or assessment drives with them, it is a little boring, but very worth it, the additional skills it teaches you regarding forward planning, reading the road are now, for me, invaluable, I have always drove fast cars (tuned RX8) or in my latest case, not much fast, just a car that could bite me if if drove it too hard (Capri 2.8i) and the ROSPA advanced driving skills are now going to pay dividends once I start learning the drive HGV’s using the aforementioned forward planning etc.
Can I just say, I posted on here, as you’re all professional drivers, so you see a similar side of driving as I do.
I did see Pistonheads, and wasn’t all taken by it, especially as I would expect comments like “don’t do dash-cam, go faster” or “don’t cycle, you’ve got a car”, not to mention any other Jeremy Clarkson-isms.
ROSPA is something my instructor recommended and had commented before I passed that he had to remind himself I wasn’t doing any advanced driving course, as he wasn’t picking up errors. So thank you for the recommendations there. I’ll definitely look into them.
Thanks martinviking, I’m fortunate that I don’t think about games, with being on the bike so much I always have to have my wits about me, so being in the car isn’t all that different.
Will take your other comments on board though, and again, when riding and having a driver not indicate is frustrating, so will definitely remember the stick things do funny things with the lights.
The main aim of my post was to find out what Dash-cams you guys use and recommend, especially as I was hoping to have one powering on each time I start the car and also the advice about being on the road.
I’m sorry if I annoyed anyone by not being or wanting to be a professional driver. Just a guy wanting some sound professional advice, thank you to those who helped with that.
