It sounded absolutely gorgeous. I would always overtake them in the car, with the passenger window open :sunglasses: :sunglasses: :sunglasses:

I know exactly where ya coming from mate!! you cannot beat that sound (or symphony as i call it), proper lump, proper niose, and no poxy hocus-pocus electronic headaches!!!

The best place to hear eight-cylinder Gardners was Burtonwood services (westbound) at 4-5am on a Saturday morning in the seventies and early eighties.

Hardly any traffic on the road apart from Suttons motors all coming home. Many a Saturday morning was spent trying to get an hours kip on the way back from West Brom before running back into the mill (in an 8LXB-engined ERF - naturally) and they were always disrupted (nicely) by Suttons lads caning it back to Elton Head Rd.

An entire fleet running one piston type - never to be repeated.

My dad had a brand new B series with an 8-pot 240 in 1980 on Farming Supplies (maldon) Ltd, they had four of them, best motors they ever ran, needing nothing more than servicing in their life time. They were totaly reliable, those 240’s were running all day long, when not powering the outfit along the road, they were driving the blowers on the trailers discharging animal feeds. The W reg of my dads ran for them til 1996, with what must have been nearly 2 million clicks on the tacho, then, went to a showman for further duties!! They did have a Sed-Atki 400 new in 1980, this had a 14L 240 Turbo ■■■■■■■■ by way of comparrison to the Gardners, but the ■■■■■■■ never matched the blowers very well and the fuel consumption at 5 and a half to the gallon was not enough to match the big Gardners high 7’s!!! Most of the 240’s were replaced (eventually) by L10 powered ERF’s as the premium on Gardners was far to high by then, much to the annoyance of the managment!!! Those were the days, very fond memories of them old B series, especially my dads, coz it had the Blue trim cab, which i loved!!   :sunglasses:
