Wanna be an Ice Road Trucker? Go to Estonia!

Well, as long as your truck real mass is less than 2 tons

They have opened a road in the river, if my informations are correct (but I guess milodon will be able to let us know more about it).

Yes, fortunately it’s been around -15 to -25 for a while now (forecast for tonight is -29) and the ice roads are being opened. this first one is actually from one peninsula to another, only four km. We are planning to visit my mother in law next weekend, hopefully the ice road to the island of Hiiumaa will be open by then, 23km.

Can i drive “off road” and go and have fun on unused part of the lake/bay whatever, or I have to stick by law to the marked bit of “the road”?

you can go wherever you want, but there are at least three cars at the bottom from this winter, no casualties though. I’ll get some photos next weekend hopefully

There are ice roads here in Finland too, for example on lake Saimaa. Both regular ones that are made every year if the conditions are suitable, and ad-hoc ones to give timber trucks access to smaller islands.

it’s taken me a while, but here are a few photos, as promised. the 45km ice road from the island Hiiumaa to mainland Estonia is not officially open this winter, as the ice is not thick enough due to massive snowfall (snow keeps the water warmer, thus hindering the formation of ice). but after going to Hiiumaa by ferry this morning and seeing many cars on the illegal iceroad, me, my gf and his brother decided to try it on our way back.

This is the ferry route, the iceroad does a big detour towards south, to be as far away from the ferry route (open water) as possible:

first off, some exercise on a poor mans snowmobile

then we head for the iceroads

I had never been on the ice road before, so we waited for a few minutes to see if somebody would drive on it before us, success by a sharan with two guys in it, they were really hauling ■■■ on the road, so out of our sight in a few minutes

this is the nice part, wide and pretty decent road, room enough to pass oncoming vehicles

sorry for the quality, we were pretty terrified at the time, a few BIG holes in the ice around us, combined with really thick snow and a very bumpy road

speaking of terrible roads, while the official ice road is maintained, signposted and patrolled very well - the illegal one is not. it’s more of a home to a serious off-roader than this! The pic was taken when I hadn’t loaded it with a scooter, a few bicycles and lots of other stuff for the way back. and it’s just a 1.6!

thank God, we made it. there is no way to turn around on the ice road, as the snow is really thick and we were just a hair away from getting hopelessly stuck when just a single opel heading for Hiiumaa passed as, forcing us away from the tracks.

after all was said and done, I saved €23 by not buying the ticket for the wonderful new ferry with free wi-fi, great coffee and food and lost a muffler on one of the terrible bumps that form over the cracks in the ice. never again  not on an unofficial road I mean :sunglasses:

Wow !! Great pics

wouln’t wan’t to go across the illeagle ice road in my own motor, don’t think the insurance company would pay out if the worst happened, would use the goverment made one though, still would be unerving thought…

yup, no insurance of any kind works here, I’m not too worried about my 10 years old peugeot though :sunglasses:

this is a not-too-uncommon occurance on the unofficial iceroads
