Wales HGV Training

Hi there,

I will be looking to start the whole journey to pass my Cat C and Cat C+E in a couple of years in North Wales, near Mold. I was wondering what training centres have a good reputation in that area?
I was looking at Chevron training but then realised the Cat C+E training and test are done in a wagon+trailer, which isn’t all that great because I would like to know how to drive and have had experience in an arctic before applying for a job.

Cheers,
Nico

its not a problem going from W&D to Artic I passed in W&D and have never driven one since always artics , you just need to watch the trailer as it follows a little different , so dont dismiss this option completley as a good trainer is worth the weight in gold believe me , go and have a few assessments and then make up your mind , you would then only need a couple of hours in an artic to get the feel and as you have said you have experience of them ,
HTH

Don’t need to add anything to this. Agree totally. I also passed in WnD. Took a 4 hour session with an Artic training school and have driven Artics since without issue.

Best of luck on your training journey.

Thanks for that. I get where you’re coming from. I read a long post on this forum about W&D vs Arctic. Seems to be many different views on the subject…

Anyway, I’m just looking for a good training school in the area. Does anybody know if P&G LGV Driver Training is any good?

I know that Chevron is good.

Huw Williams on Angelsey is a good trainer and he does his class one on a artic

Hi Nico, I done all my training with Emerald in Deeside. Very reasonable and have full artic training.

+1

did my cat c with him, going back for c+e sometime soon.

As the time gets nearer to when you want to train the best way to make a decision is to visit who ever you have narrowed the short list to. See the vehicles, meet the staff, see the facilities and ask all the questions you feel will help to make a decision

Good luck with it.

John

Not sure of your age but I imagine over 18 so why not get the LGV provisional now (it lasts til you’re 45) You could then have some assessment drives to get the feel. Obviously not in a C+E but it will get you going. Personally I feel Chevron is probably your best bet as you will have access to them on here whenever and I have never read a bad thing about them.

Once you feel within 12 months of starting pass the theory and Mod 2 then you really are ready to get going. You are doing right to plan but remember it will cost more the longer you leave it with loaded vehicles etc.

Good luck

Yeah I’m 19 at the moment. Thanks for the info on the provisional license, I didn’t realise it lasted that long. I’ll definitely look into getting it.

What do you mean when you say it will cost longer if I leave it because of the loaded vehicles?

Cheers

What do you mean when you say it will cost longer if I leave it because of the loaded vehicles?

Training vehicles have to be partially loaded as from end of September this year and can be loaded from July 1st to allow for transision. Logic says that it will cost more to run the vehicle with a load. The same logic says that these costs will inevitably be passed on through increased training fees.

Sadly I think some trainers will use this as an excuse to really hike up the fees disproportionately.

The cost of training rarely falls. So it’s fair to assume it will never be cheaper than it is now.

All the best, Pete
