Waiting at Tesco

Has anyone got any opinions on Tesco’s new policy at a number of RDCs ?

This new directive states that you are not allowed to stay in your vehicle whilst it is being tipped . This would possibly be bearable if Tesco could unload a vehicle in less than 2 hours but in my experience they are unable to do this.

As far as I am aware Tesco have not designated a waiting area for drivers , expecting you to hang around near the coffee machine. Naturally their canteen facilities are not available to visiting drivers.

Tesco’s justification for this new rule is " Health and Safety " . They have obviously not considered the H and S of the poor visiting drivers . I for one am not going to put up with this treatment … I am quite happy to drop the trailer whilst it is being unloaded but refuse to be banished from my cab with it’s comfy bed ,tv and coffee maker for an undetermined length of time.

This issue really needs drivers to get together and make their views to Tesco known , so how about it !!

Is this really true ? When did this start ? I was at Middlewich last week and sat in my cab whilst being tipped.

I thought Barry Tozer had sorted this out with them at a meeting ages ago ?

Chepstow and Didcot doing it now, think they both operated by Excel.

Apparently will be at all RDC s soon

Agree with you there, drop the trailer and don’t hand in keys. If they were genuinely interested in Health and Safety then they would be interested in yours too. I believe they are supposed to legally. Untill they learn to do this follow above. - Right on.  Bout time you others followed suit too. :unamused:

you really have to ask that ROB… :wink:

my guesstimate…NIL.

i can well imagine it happening
another pathetic health and safety issue
there must be some real real genuine MUPPETS out there

Excel, Wincanton or who ever, the bigger they are, the worse they are. They all must have an office with some jobsworth wearing a shiny tin badge dreaming up daft rules and regulations that might impress their blue chip clients.

A tale about Hi-Viz vests:
A driver was delivering to a large RDC on a bright hot sunny day. The temperature is in the low 30’s so he can’t be assed to put on his Hi-Viz, gets out, opens curtains and is just about to get back into cab to wait when suddenly an FLT comes screaming across the yard at full speed, schreeeches to halt inches from the cab. :open_mouth:

FLT driver “hey drive, wheres yer hi-viz”

Trucker “geezus its to hot to wear one of them mate” :exclamation:

FLT driver “my boss (points to second floor office window 200 metres away)has just given me a good rolocking cuz your not wearin it”

Trucker “If your boss can see me from up there, then I don’t need a Hi-Viz”

FLT driver  spins FLT round and tears off.

On a serious note, if you go to the HSE website, there is a download of what Employers/Companies MUST make available. I can’t remember all of it it but one thing is a FREE supply of drinking water. One area where Asda RDC’s seriously fall down. Another is for a facilty for pregnant females to lie down. It’s worth reading and carrying a copy with you.

I believe that Tesco’s do have a policy of, if you are on site for 4 hours or more, then they will provide a meal. This was subsequent to the time that I spent 9 hours + on site at Kiln Farm. Mob handed, six of us walked off site to the local chippy. the Security bods had visions of stopping us but thought better of it. Particularly as half the perimter fencing had been removed for replacement.

Asda have the best policy. Use the canteens if you wish. Richard at Bedford is a great chef. Fantastic meals and always has time for a joke. So why does Skelmerdale have a rule that you can only use the canteen after being on the site for 4 1/2 hours?

Another is for a facilty for pregnant females to lie down.

Now you tell me…after 5 very dizzy hours on a chair at IKEA Thrapston because I wasn’t allowed to drop the trailer (Con’Ships ruling) and wasn’t allowed to stay in the truck if I didn’t drop it and pull into their parking area (IKEA’s ruling)… :unamused: :unamused: :unamused: …Is there anything in there about post natal ones who are highly liable to kick off if they don’t pull their collective fingers out and tip me? :bulb: :stuck_out_tongue:

I can’t see the problem when you are paid hourly  On Fed Ex I often had two bookings at Tesco MK, 1st one at 8.00am, 2nd one at 4.00pm and would offload the first one then wait till 4.00pm to unload the second, then have a night out outside my Towcester home :exclamation:

I was only based at Rugby, I would do a total of about 50 miles, take 13 hours and have night out pay on top for being home that night

After being made redundant from that job I was taken on at Tesco MK

After being made redundant from that job I was taken on at Tesco MK

No wonder you got made redundant, all that hanging about you done

… just a thought. If Tesco’s are insisting that you do not stay in the truck AND that you hand the keys over, then are they not taking possession of the vehicle ? In which case surely they assume liability for both truck and contents (including driver’s belongings) - if it was my truck / stuff I think I would want a manager’s signature to say that they will replace anything lost / damaged / stolen whilst they are in possession of your stuff !?!

Sure that would really go down like a lead balloon !!

handing your keys in before you unload
just get a spare one cut problem solved there happy and your happy
or even give them any old bunch of keys

Just got home and reading this thread.
Yes I did get some things sorted with Tesco, and I wanted to continue to follow the meeting up and make sure they kept to their word.
I asked for drivers to keep me informed, as I do not go there. Response from drivers. Almost zero.

I will happily continue to badger these RDcs
But I cannot do anything without facts and back up.

I will contact John Boulter (Logistics Director) and find out the facts on this thread.

Very good point to try and get Tesco to take responsibility for all vehicles and contents that are entirely in their control . Unfortunately You just know that there’s no way Tesco will sign anything accepting that responsibility !

This rule has an effect for an hourly paid driver as well, in that I doubt that time spent in the Tesco ’ facility ’ would be counted as a Period of Availability . This may be a good thing for the driver , but I doubt his hard pressed employer will see the advantages.
