Wages

What should a new driver be looking to earn on a 47 hour week.
22000 a year is this reasonable.

Hi Pete
Welcome to the forum what kind of work are you doing? Wages are a minefield tbh

Hi mate. Tell me about it. I’m doing some yard work and some delivering fencing materials building products etc My job titles yard/hgv driver. But seams to end up being more yard I took the Job to try and get on the hgv ladder and gain some experience. Didn’t won’t to go on a agency because of all the thing you here about them. I really won’t to get on the tippers or cement lorries the construction industry but finding it hard to find some one to take me on.

I earn more working for that large food distribution firm as a new pass. They make you earn every penny mind.

It’s probably about the going rate for builders merchant work. I went for a job at Jewsons once, identical hours, and the manager was visibly embarrassed to tell me what the wage was. I didn’t take it. You could earn more elsewhere but with early starts and longer hours.

£30k plus is on offer with the likes of Brakes. The line of work you’re in is notoriously poor pay especially with every other Saturday too. And they’re usually recruiting…

Does it pay your bills and do you have enough to live comfortably afterwards? That’s all that matters when it comes to wages.

Not in ■■■■■■■ Surrey it won’t! Unless he wants to live with mum and dad forever…

[emoji23] so true. Luckily the Mrs gets here ■■■■■ out.

I work for a small firm own account, but we do drive low cab cf days, tanker work odd night away, one a week if we’re busy! Non hazardous average 60 -65 hrs a week take home £600 a week

Looks like I might have to go on the job hunt again. Hours are not a problem nights early starts etc don’t mind.

I know a fair few with kids who did casual , was it 3 days a week , 30 hrs max ( I’m struggling to remember actual days / hours ) as any more affected there benifits , I’d look into it as you maybe not any worse off earning 20 k doing say 3 days than doing 30k for 5 days taking into account benifits
But best of luck with job search Pete

Half of it is crap spouted by people who’ve never used them. They’re not all bad, you just have to have your wits about you when you sign up and understand you won’t get 5 days a week every week of the year. One thing agency work will do is get you experience in a very wide range of different types of work, load and vehicle, far more than you’d ever get if you went with regular employment which is good for a new starter. It gives you the opportunity to try something that you’d never ever consider for a job but may end up liking, in my case it was waste food skips and compactors on class 2. Didn’t want to go, thought I’d just do the days I was booked for never to return but ended up loving it. If I’d have seen the job advertised in the newspaper before doing it on agency I’d have never applied.
