wages

I would like to congratulate myself for being the only person who tells agencies and employers where to go when it comes to wages below £11 p.h.,and before I get it in the neck I am putting my house and family at risk in saying no to work that pays below £11.I am being told by Employers and agencies no one else questions the rate,or they can get drivers for less than the above rate.
They tend to forget there is a hell of a lot of power in them big lorries they want us to drive, the power is the drivers themselves.Really getting hacked off being a member of the working poor.

Must try harder mate, really is that the best you can do for your first post?

Congratulate yourself? There are members on here who wouldn’t get out bed for than 1k a week and reach around from the bosses wife.

Must be children’s hour.

I have a sneaky feeling you are already a member on here and youve joined under a different guise and looking to start yet another agency bashing thread. To come out with “congratulate myself on being the only driver to refuse to work for less than £11” is a bold and silly comment. :unamused:

That will be a couple of dozen at most, but let me congratulate you on a decent wage packet, hope the hours are below 40 hours a week or is the truck welded to your arse?.

bold maybe Snowman, silly, try factual as i posted both agency and employers have told me that no bother getting drivers to drive below the £11 p.h.
The only agenda here is to say no to working poor wages based on life in the modern day.

OP, you cant congratulate yourself on being the only driver earning over £11, there are many others, but they don’t tend to go around shouting about it

Welcome to the club though…

Well I can’t fault you mate!! You are absolutely correct in what you say. Wages are poor in this industry and if you can get £11 per hour that’s good. I think £11 per hour is about right for the responsibility we have. If other people are happy earning the same £8.50 per hour that was been offered 15 years ago then they are fools. Drivers have the mindset that they are okay on a poor hourly rate because they can boost it up by working 60 hours per week. Employers exploit this and know that drivers are stupid enough to work long, unsociable hours to make a living wage. I know drivers that are devastated if they do less than 11 hours per day but don’t have the brains to realise if they were on a good hourly rate then they wouldn’t have to work these excessive, outdated Victorian sweatshop hours. Sadly, nothing will change until we stick to the 48 hour WTD that was brought in to protect us but is completely ignored by everyone!!

Hero-

I think I’d rather support my family and keep a house above my head than refusing work like that.

It’s this attitude that has resulted in wages being frozen in the UK for years. Congratulations!

So what then, you put your perceived self-importance over paying the mortgage and providing for your family?

Isn’t everyone’s circumstances different,I don’t get £11 per hour but I walk to work so have no travel costs,at work in 5 minutes so back home 5 minutes after parking up,decent company, good workmates,no hassle, steady job,I’m happy enough

Hmmm…im getting three potential scenarios here;

  1. Snowman’s point. ie another user causing mischief.

  2. A reasonably good effort at first time trolling.

  3. Someone who thinks passing a couple of tests allows you to rival Richard Branson’s income, get adored by everyone, and be in more demand than a cure for Ebola.

lol it is not desypete is it?

People seem to miss this part out when willy waving. I could get a higher hourly rate if i was up for spending up to an hour each way traveling there and doing store work which i don’t want. So instead i stick with my local company on an lower hourly rate but save on fuel bills etc and the work is easy.

Oh goody, yet another thread about wages! :unamused: If money is your only yardstick and you can earn more (a) Dog Walking (B) shelf stacking in Tescos (C) being a Gigolo, then you know what to do; chuck the key’s on the desk and go walk a dog, stack a shelf or shag yourself into an early grave. However if you enjoy driving a truck as a career, have a decent gaffer and are prepared to work hard and put the hours in then just get on with it quietly and keep to yourself how much wonga you earn. Years ago nobody gave a toss what anybody else got paid as everyone was paid differently anyway and most driver’s didn’t moan and winge like a certain few do on here but just enjoyed the job for what it was, a chance to get out in the fresh air, see the country and get paid for it instead of being shut inside an office or a factory like a battery hen.

Great post if you are fortunate enough to have a good job where the boss treats you with respect and pays you a decent wage for the hours that you do. You probably have a decent unit and every trailer you pick up is road legal. You probably do the same routes mostly where you know it like the back of your hand and you have a laugh and a bit of banter with the customers you deliver to. Get off your high horse, not many people are as fortunate as you! Stop being so judgemental about other drivers, this is after all a forum and “wages” is an issue for most drivers. :imp:

what hes not telling us is. he only did 6 hrs work last week

seen 2 drivers (if thats what i could call them) last week, i wouldnt pay them £5 per hour :unamused:

For your information I finished driving 12 years ago, and yes I did have good gaffer’s, I wouldn’t have worked for a bad one would I and nobody else should with all the driving jobs available these days? Didn’t have a unit either as it was class 2 work and the truck was several years old and I helped maintain it myself, each day was different and yes, I had some fun with the customers as they kept me employed! Money was OK, there were probably others on more doing similar work but I was content which, and correct me if I am wrong, many it seems are not? Not getting on any High Horse, as I said if money is the only reason that you are driving and it isn’t enough then find a job that does pay you what you want even if doesn’t involve a truck!
