Wages

Its an example of lots of companies using the economy and fuel prices as an excuse to pay to pay slave labour. They say they can’t afford to pay more yet these same companies will spend tens of thousands on a brand you Merc Actros or Volvo FH yet still pay the driver a pittance.
.

Yep, that’s the truth, but how many off those drivers will moan like buggery if they got offered a Renault Premium/85 Daf/FM etc, Instead off the high spec style Trucks, but got offered a couple of quid an hour more :unamused: Plenty is the answer

Couldn’t agree more. I personally quite like the Renault Premiums. I find them much more comfy than the Daf XF. And a bit nippier too. I’d sacrifice a few quid an hour for the so-called “lesser” truck

But ive had worse than £7.90 p/h. I passed my class 1 three years ago and no one would give me a chance as I had no experience. I ended up having to take the first company who offered me a chance. For the pricey sum of £7.02 p/h! I do agency now and will not work for less than £11 p/h nights.

Maybe you have to look at the £7.02 ph job as the key that got you something better, and pleased to see that it did.

Don’t get me wrong,I will forever be grateful to them for giving me the chance I was desperate for. I paid £2500 for a class 1 because that was the one I wanted, only to get the phone put down on me because I was a new pass. They offered me a job after one mornings trial and apart from one instance where I forgot to check my unit height vs my fifth wheel height, slipped the pin and smashed the rear lights,I have never damaged a vehicle in 3 years. It enabled me to get the experience I needed to work for an agency paying £11.50 an hour.
But this company uses 63 plate Scanias and Actros and pays £7.02,the same as the guys driving the 53 plate Scania bone shakers. And they make a LOT of money from their 2 most lucrative contracts

Tell me about it its not bad at all for class 2 work… iv put in a sneaky application

am I reading it right? It’s for Allied Bakeries? If so,I find them a reasonable company to work for. Helpful, don’t pile on the stress, cheery etc. Better than some!

I drove Premiums for 11 years, tramping too, never had an issue with them, good reliable tool. though I think you might have made a typo

You meant I hope, you’d accept a few quid an hour more, for the so called “lesser” truck

Lol, I most certainly did mean accept rather than sacrifice.

Sad thing is, £7.60-£7.90 isn’t actually that shocking these days.

Isn’t that not far off the basic rate at Stobarts?

No ,it was posted up on a thread on here recently that day rate is £10.10 p.h ,there was a picture of the flyer the company had put up at there depots with this rate on it .

Lasted job advert for them on biomass is £79.50 day rate + £15 meal allowance Monday - Friday. £10.20hr Saturdays and £11.25hr Sundays.

OOPs sorry,7,50,or very near that, its a long time ago ,i am sure deckboypeggy can confirm this as he was also there,

Edit to say,it was more a figure of speach,i cant remember exactly what Bowker payed us on UK,but i do remember that we had it very very good ,i was on Continental 99% of my time with him,he was a gentleman to work for,

Keep turning up for it they’ll keep paying it. You get what you deserve no more no less.

Unfortuntly if someone says “im not working for that” and makes a stand by leaving, there will ALWAYS be someone else who works for it. Not working for it does not automatically mean wages will rise unless everyone, and I mean EVERYONE, stands together and forces companies to pay professional drivers a professional wage

like it or not thats because 1 persons commitments are different to the next and some people have no choice if they want to survive but to take the roles.

this will never change, the only way it will is when they pay below what the desperate person needs to survive.

so for a 15 hr day your looking at £5.30 an hour?

Hmm in the north east of england £7.50 per hour is about on average what all the (container) haulage firms pay for the first 48 hours, so no eyebrows are raised here :unamused:

maga:
i believe you take what you can get down in that neck of the woods, i doubt many companies pay more than that in the SW

Poor as it is, Id say that was a little above the norm in that neck of the woods.

i thought the wages on the mainland would have been better than that, most Irish drivers wouldn’t do a weeks cross channel work for less that 550/600 in there hand,
ive just started with a new company, cross channel work, over sun night/Mon morning, back Fri or sat morning, average working day is no more than 10hrs, around 45-50 hrs a week, for around 420 in my hand plus night allowances for the week at around 125 tax free, i wouldn’t open the door of a lorry for 7 or 8 quid an hour, its a disgrace that any class 1 driver should be made work for that

Wages vary and payments also vary within just one region but they all have their perks and downsides.

As a TM i was paid £28-£32K so lets land that in the middle of £30k, averaging 11hrs per day over 5 days £580pw so your looking at £10ph

My planners where on salaries from £22k-£27k so going with £25k for 11hrs per day £480pw £8.7ph

One company around here pays trip money £150 for a London job, another pays £420 for a flat week @ 55hrs plus daily overtime - so £7.5ph but “in general” drivers have the opportunity to have higher earnings based on the hours of work. £450 in your pocket per week, is about right for driving euro too so away all week. Another company pays £8.5ph 10 drops per day rush rush rush.

Its all horses for courses, as a driver i would want to be down the road and home at the weekend, take a little less per hour knowing that i have some tax free earnings and a potential for overtime pay. I prefer this as that way i am not pushing to be home and up early, i can just roll out the bunk and turn the key.

Heres another one around the corner from me in the north west & not in the west Country ( even though I wish I was).
