did Tommy Roberts drive that one boss!!! great bloke taught me a lot took him a long time

Hiya JR yea before your time ! You would still be running round the school yard with a snotty nose and a lump of ginger cake in your hand!!! The Seddon was a 30’5 gvw but still could carry 20 ton on the Cooke trailers I supplied them with a new York LD34 36ft at the same time(eventually our fleet no 7) Tommy got it brand new and then came to work for us when we bought the two tractors and 7 trailers. He was a bit wary but we asked him where he would like to run to all the time SCOTLAND! Rock-on said so thats where he ran to ! problem solved permanently!! We then put him on a new Sed/Atk and he thought he was the “Dogs” then onto a Scania which is where you might have appeared on the Fleet !!! ( we didn’t really deserve this ! ) I saw Tommy for the last time at Eddie Airey’s 70th and he was the same Tommy but he was crippled with Arthritis and could hardly pick his half up but we had a good crack that was the main thing !! We never had a wrong word out of him as long as he was going north and he always had the lowest phone bill on the fleet!! Cheers Dennis.

I think Tommy drove the sister to this Sed/Atk which was VEC382R although this one is coupled to an ex Henry Cooke trailer and looks like it is heading to collect some chemical or other mill requirement on pallets when he is tipped .Bewick.

I think alot of the chineese six Guys that Keiths had were cut down 8 wheelers I had a photo of one some where of a cut down 8 wheeler to a chineese six unit to competer with the higher weights. I think some of the D-series had 680 Leylands in them!

I’ll try and keep you right here young Burrows! You are right that Kruger did cut down the 8 wheeler Guy’s to make tractor units but their braking efficiencies were not up to 32 ton standard so they were un-plateable.They never cut down the 8’s to make chinese 6 tippers or flats ! they were all lightweight 4 wheelers that had steer axles put under them! and the Fords were fitted with Leyland 600s.I’ve often sat in the cab of one of the fords with Bill Keith at Beetham when he used to do the odd load of pulp for us and I was always intrigued at the explanations he would give me as to why and how they did the conversions. Bewick.

the old man and Mcguffie said it was frank dutton that did the conversions would that be correct

I think Kruger coverted some of his 8 wheelers into tractors but the origional steers were factory built and had Leyland 350/375 engines and while were on JR and you have mentioned that T**t Lefty ask him how he managed to park this Henry Cooke trailer on its side at Ambleside !!! Dennis.

There was another fleet called Taylor who were based near Keiths. and of course there is ME Saunders of Ulverston.

That’d probably be Geoff Taylor he now runs Scanias and a DAF. I got this Seddon Atkinson postcard and on it is one of Krugers Sed Atki’s. I remember the Crane Fruehauf vans they had.

One of his Sed Atki’s ended up at Terry Danson’s yard at Ulverston. Walsh’s took it away for scrap a few years ago.

I dont have any pics of the FL10’s he had but here are a couple of a Guy J and Leyland T45.

I note that the T45 is pulling one of Brady’s orange trailers!
