Atkinson Borderer 4X2 tractor unit Reg No MVD 432L Fleet No 21 ‘Courageous’ was powered by a ■■■■■■■ 220 engine in line with a Fuller 610 gearbox and group axle it is pictured here in 1979 heading North on the M50 at the junction with the A417.After unloading steel plate in South Wales from Motherwell it had collected a return load of 20 tons of bagged fertilizer.
This work was done of behalf behalf of W.H. Holmes of Garstang for delivery to their storage facility at Winmarleigh near Preston which was quite a regular job for Riding’s at the time.
W…H. Holmes later became Safeguard Storage who themselves were eventually taken over by TDG Ltd.
Thanks for the info on that pic Paul.
You mentioned W.H.Holmes and heres a clipping from 1972.

OilySorry for late reply Oily but have looked at all those sites you mentioned but unfortunately none are suitable.
Have a month left to try and get things sorted but due to the vast size of the content on the site, 400GB, it’s not looking good.

That shot in my opinion is the finest that has ever appeared on the TN site it really does bring tears to the eyes ! What a class line up of the finest UK chassis of their time ! A credit to Mr T !!! I hope you can get a new “berth” for Tom’s “Baby” but if not they can’t erase our memories of one of the greatest UK Hauliers of the era ! Bewick.

Well Lance I reckon those Holmes Lads were extremely brave buying an ex Sam Anderson unit It would have been battered up and down the road day and night and not necessarily using two Drivers !
Cheers Dennis.
Thanks to the valued support of the late Tom Riding’s family i thought i would let people know that a new ‘History of W & J Riding’ website will go on line in early September as a legacy to Tom Riding.
When the site goes live it will be at wjriding.co.uk.
I have started a Ridings Facebook group that will run alongside the brand new website which is a place for any comments or questions about W & J Riding.

Great to see you have saved it Paul , would the Carefoot name mentioned in the history of Ridings be linked to the Carefoot haulier of today from Lancashire ?
Just great to see this superb thread back up and running so the last thing we want to see is Diesel Dave closing the TN site down now do we Lads !
I enjoyed watching the video and have two observations to make but not critical of course ! First off I was surprised to learn how concentrated Ridings Customer list was on about four main sources of traffic but they surely had many other sources of traffic such as Heinz at Kitt Green springs to mind but no mention was made in the Vid. The other observation and right up our street at Bewick Transport was that Ridings controlled all their vehicle movements on a manual basis at Longridge which was the same at the Milnthorpe traffic office of Bewick Transport. And finally I could see that much of Ridings business was supplying ancillary services to their customers apart from just the transport operation so again I was surprised to see that our respective fleet sizes were similar albeit that Ridings were more specialised as they ran many Powder/cement tankers . I will say that Mr Tom should have had letters after his name, well some that meant something anyway, which would have been R O C ( Return on Capital) and he sure did that for the Parent TDG over the years which is why they left him to his “own devices” I reckon and it was three letters he threw at me a few times over the years ! Well done Paul regards Dennis.
Thanks for the interesting reply Dennis.
Tom’s adage was “If your customers are doing well so will you” which was definitely the case back then with thriving customers like ICI, RMC, Heinz, British Steel and Bainbridge Silencers to name but a few.

Thanks Ramone It was a big task but it is now up and running with over 7000 views in the first week.
You are correct in that Walter Carefoot was Jim Ridings brother in law.
Here’s a shot of the very man himself founder of the company Walter Carefoot.
We now have an employee section on the web site with plenty of photographs of former staff just click on this link below
