VOSA Stopping Tippers Today Abingdon A34

Listening to CB talk this morning, VOSA having been having a purge on tippers. Some things drivers have been pulled up on (not necessarily punished for though) are;
Not sheeting.
Axle and MG weights.
Usual defect checks.
Checking for a time shown on pre start checks.
DCPC cards.
Usual tacho checks.
Apparently the load can’t be above the sides now and if it is you’re expected to climb up and level it. Quite how the quarries and sites will see this I don’t know as they wont allow it.
It seems many tippers will be running well under capacity if this level load rule is applied strictly. Fit greedy boards or deep bodies and run the risk of being overweight.

Haven’t they always been targeting tippers…?

Some guys have been done for underinflated tyres recently so… while non-tacho maniacs plow through Glasgow…
Haven’t heard about axle weight checks though yet…

They ment business at crick today 2 vosa cars waiting at Watford gap ,and another at Leicester forest .

At the moment there are loads of us running artic tippers from didcot power station up to Derbyshire. Are they interested in us?.

No.
By the way - last 2 times when they were out for hunt (in area I drove by) they were in places - bays, where artics cant get in - and had lineup of rigids.

Excellent. Wouldn’t want them getting excited if I’m running 44,200kg of scrap metal ha.

Loads of tippers on muck and aggregates running up and down the A34. Great Western Park at Didcot, Milton Interchange roadworks, Harwell Science area, plus a lot more from way out of Oxfordshire running to Earthline at Shipton. Someone told me there’s upto 60 loads per hour going into there, three ‘dozers running side by side on the tip with a fourth as spare.
Einigs’ got loads running into WRG landfills at Sutton Courtenay, Stanton Harcourt and Viridor at Ardley. Then you’ve got Smiths and Hansons doing their own thing too so VOSA have a good chance of a few quid.

Most likely if you wil be running that with bits flying off and rigid tipper will be running next to you they will pull rigid and ignore your metal bits flying off to into their windscreens…

Class 1 makes you glorified and immune…

Mrginge wearing a David Essex style neckerchief and a leather jacket a whippet and a cousin in his cab, wearing Argos jewellery and a smell of Old Spice in the air…
“D’ya like dawgs sir?”

They wait there near everyday and every hours swith “follow me” to some truck. Some night work as well.

I had that a few Times. Slowed always a bit down and waved with the Hand the Lorry behind forward. Worked everytime :bulb:

Thank you please.

the nodding donkey:
Thank you please.

Quite. Glad I don’t hear him over the cb.

I know I’m not meant to bite, but come on :open_mouth: , I mean seriously come on :open_mouth: If they want you they would “Slowed always a bit down and waved with the Hand the Lorry behind forward. Worked everytime” and there you are right plum behind, “follow me driver”.

Years ago, when there was still an island(r’about) at Gonerby island, where Grantham services are, the Ministry were having a bit of a purge of foreign hauliers, I had a Dutch trailer on, without My reg plate on(only the dutch reg plate), I see the Bike Cop sat on the side of the A1 near Foston, and saw him pull out in my mirrors, so I did the same so he couldn’t get past, zipped round the island cracked on south bound A1, the bike cop pulled Me over in the 1st lay by past the services, bingo I thinks, not a chance, He escorted Me upto the A52 and back to the services. Best of all, the Ministry Man see’s the British unit, clears Me straight back out on the road, no check, foreigners only that day

Do the Police/VOSA still pull trucks off of the Motorways and direct them to service areas, had that a couple of times on the M6 at Stafford back in the nineties? Even had a VOSA inspection on the hard shoulder of the M1 between junction 37 and 36, that was strange with the examiner laying underneath and keeping his toes tucked in away from the slow lane traffic while the copper was in my cab keeping nice and warm! Best part was when the copper was happy that all was in order tacho wise and told me to go, I had to remind him that a chap was still laying underneath!

Pete.

The checkpoint at Swindon beside the M4 could be dodged by using the middle lane and exiting into lane two of the A419.
Not sure if they now put a “hgvs use lane 1” type sign out nowadays. I know I’ve seen one somewhere.

I think its rare now that the Police pull you in, VOSA/DVSA do it all themselves, but yes they still grab you from the Motorway. At Beattock they sometimes get all HGV’s to enter the check area, never seen it done any where else.

Blimey that wheel tapper was keen, to inspect a vehicle on the hard shoulder, now come on driver what was you upto

Strangest check I had, was when I was taking a well earned nap one afternoon in a layby on the A12 to Lowestoft(dragging the job out, again  ), heard voices outside the cab, sat up in the bunk to see a copper stood outside, who saw Me before I had the chance to hide, “afternoon driver, this gentleman wants to check your vehicle”, bugger :open_mouth: but what can you do, as I did point out, “well you know I’ve had plenty of rest” They must have been really bored, riding about looking for trucks, or maybe it was because it was Frans Maas :sunglasses:

It was strange Eddie, for two reasons! I had just tipped a load of tarmac in Barnsley and, because it had been snowing overnight and salt was spread on the M1, I had cleaned my back lights so they had no reason to stop me really, apart from being in a rigid tipper of course! :unamused: Also there was/is a VOSA checkpoint at junction 36 which was only a few minutes away as I was heading South, surely it would have been safer to do it there or in a layby?

At Stafford on the M6 northbound the Police used to pull alongside you and shout for you to follow them, they then took you off the M6 at junction 14 and led you into the checkpoint for a tap round and C&E were there for a diesel dip as well. When I drove for Tilcon we NEVER got stopped, however when Tilcon sold the trucks off to a new owner (but still kept them in Tilcons livery) we were often pulled!

Pete.

Once in Reading services, a VOSA bloke knocked on the truck nextdoor to be told to come back when the driver’d had his break. I don’t know if he did as that was one occasion where I was only to willing to have exactly 45 mins break.

Yes there is that check point at Tankersley just off J36, I got pulled there once :open_mouth: with a brand new truck :sunglasses: think the copper stood on the roundabout must have been getting bored

They have a dedicated VOSA check point on the works area north of J14 M6 now(at least 10 yrs), the VOSA sit in there Galaxies either on the northbound on ramp(j 14) or on a perch a few hundred yards further up, and then get in front and direct you to follow :unamused:

Ha ha, its nice when you feel immune, but no so clever once your fleet is marked.

Oh those old multi agency checks, wheel tappers, customs, dss, telecoms(cb licences), trading standards(weights and measures), and the old bill had to stand back and act purely as traffic wardens, and some of them really hated it    others took it for an easy day out
